BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana Athletics honored 28 student-athletes who achieved a 4.0 during the Spring 2012 semester with the inaugural Academic Excellence Dinner. Benefactors, Steve and Kathy Shuel, have generously committed to providing this opportunity each semester to celebrate the exemplary academic accomplishments of the student-athletes. The student-athletes were joined by campus officials, athletic administrators, coaches and academic advisors to recognize their outstanding efforts.
The Shuels were thrilled that their interest in establishing this recognition was received with open arms by the university. "Kathy and I are so pleased that we could be a part of creating a special and meaningful event for these IU student-athletes. Earning the highest possible GPA at the institution is impressive on its own, but to know it was received while maintaining demanding athletic schedules, is pretty remarkable," said IU graduate Steve Shuel. The connection to IU, the Athletics Department and Academic Services runs in the Shuel Family. Steve's cousin, Ames Shuel, provided the financial support for the D. Ames Shuel Academic Center in Memorial Stadium.
"We are extraordinarily proud of the 28 student-athletes who earned a perfect 4.0 grade point average last semester. Their tremendous achievements bring honor and distinction to IU Athletics," said Vice President and Director of Athletics Fred Glass. "It is important that these accomplishments are celebrated, and I want to thank all of those who were involved in making the inaugural Academic Excellence Dinner a great success, especially its originators and founders, Steve and Kathy Shuel".
