BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University Athletics is proud to announce that the new self-loading, twelve barreled, hand cranked Gatling gun that is capable of blasting t-shirts 150 feet, has been officially named the "Tommy Gun" in honor of head men's basketball coach Tom Crean. The new t-shirt gun was purchased to enhance the gameday experience at Assembly Hall and to provide more t-shirts to fans in all corners of the historic basketball venue.
"We thought long and hard about what to name this state-of-the-art t-shirt launcher," said Indiana University Vice President and Director of Athletics Fred Glass. "What better to name it than the `Tommy Gun' in honor of the coach who brought IU back to the top of the college basketball world."
The gun is powered by two 6-volt batteries and a 20 lbs. CO2 tank and has a range of over 150 feet. The twelve barrels make the gun capable of shooting eight shots per second. The "Tommy Gun" has a special kill-switch used to activate and deactivate the gun. Fans attending games at Assembly Hall are encouraged to be on the lookout for flying t-shirts. Other high tech t-shirt launchers that operate under the guise of different names will also be found at various IU Athletics events.
