No. 9 Hoosiers Power Past Santa Clara, 9-6

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The No. 9 Indiana Hoosiers women's water polo team (6-2) used a four-goal flurry in the second period to separate from Santa Clara and never looked back, grabbing the 9-6 win to open play at the Triton Invitational. The Hoosiers will meet No. 12 Loyola Marymount at 5:50 p.m. PT.
Sophomore Amanda Redfern notched a first half hat trick to lead the Hoosiers in scoring. Freshman Summer Creighton and sophomore Shae Fournier posted a pair of goals each, while senior Hanna Eimstad and freshman Shelby Taylor added one apiece.
Senior Cassie Wyckoff registered 10 saves and allowed three goals in the cage. Freshman Jojo White played the final 3:45 of the contest, recording one save.
Redfern got things started with a power play goal on the first possession of the game, scoring after a freshman Colleen McNaught earned the kickout. Taylor added the second IU goal from long range after a McNaught assist. McNaught dished out a career-high five assist in the win.
The Broncos got on the board late in the first with a power play goal.
Redfern ignited a furious Hoosier outburst in the second period, scoring back-to-back goals in a span of 37 seconds. Creighton and Eimstad each added goals near the midway point of the second quarter to extend the IU lead to 6-1. Santa Clara had their second power play goal late in the period to pull within four at the break.
Fournier got into the scoring action during the third quarter, notching two scores to give the Hoosiers an 8-2 lead.
Santa Clara posted another 6-on-5 goal to close out the third quarter scoring with five seconds on the clock.
The Hoosiers scored on a power play of their own on the first possession of the fourth quarter with Creighton converting to give IU the 9-3 lead. IU finished 5-for-8 on power plays against the Broncos.
The Broncos scored three goals late in the contest to pull within three before the final buzzer.
