LA JOLLA, Calif. - The No. 9 Indiana Hoosiers women's water polo team (6-3) was defeated in a highly contested battle with No. 12 Loyola Marymount, 7-5, on Saturday in the second game of Bracket D at the Triton Invitational.
The Hoosiers rallied from an early three-goal deficit to challenge the Lions throughout the second half, but it was not enough as LMU withstood the IU momentum swing and held on for the win.
Sophomore Shae Fournier led Indiana with two goals, each coming in the second half. The freshman trio of Alexis Jones, Colleen McNaught, and Shelby Taylor added one score apiece in the loss.
Senior goalkeeper Cassie Wyckoff recorded eight saves and a steal against the Lions in a complete 32 minutes of action.
The opening period was dominated by the defenses until LMU scored in transition with 33 seconds remaining in the quarter to take the early lead.
The Lions increased their lead to 3-0 by the midway point of the second stanza after a pair of close-range goals, including one power play conversion.
The final 1:03 of the half featured scoring from both squads, with the first coming from Jones on the straightaway shot to get the Hoosiers on the board. The Lions responded 22 seconds later with lob to take a 4-1 lead until McNaught countered by firing in a shot off the goalkeeper and into the net to cut the lead to two at the break.
LMU opened the second half with a goal during their first possession to take a 5-2 lead.
The Hoosiers grabbed momentum in the middle of the third after goals from Taylor and Fournier sliced the deficit to one. Fournier also registered two steals and a trio of field blocks in the contest.
The Lions overcame the Hoosier rally with a lob late in the third, followed by a power play score early in the fourth to extend the lead to three.
Fournier added her second goal of the game in the final minutes to leave the deficit at two.
The Hoosiers will take on UC Santa Barbara at 8:30 a.m. PT on Sunday. Indiana won in overtime, 8-6, at UCSB on January 29.
