BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Two members of the Indiana Hoosiers women's water polo team (8-3) earned weekly awards from the Collegiate Water Polo Assocation (CWPA) after their standout play at the Triton Invitational over the weekend, announced the conference office.
Sophomore Shae Fournier was named Western Division Player of the Week and senior goalkeeper Cassie Wyckoff earned Western Division Defensive Player of the Week after leading the Hoosiers to a 3-1 mark and a fifth place finish in La Jolla, Calif.
Fournier led the charge for the Indiana offense, totaling 12 goals, four assists, and five earned exclusions during the four-game stint. The Winnipeg, Manitoba native was also a force on the defense end, racking up 11 steals and nine field blocks. She leads the team with 30 goals, 28 steals, and 36 field blocks on the year.
Fournier's weekend was highlighted by back-to-back career-high-tying four goals games in wins over No. 16 UC Santa Barbara and No. 17 Maryland. Fournier has matched her career-high eight times in her time at IU.
In the win against UCSB, Fournier went on a three-goal run when the game was tied to put the Hoosiers in front for good. She also had the game-winning goal with 2:11 remaining against the Terps in the fifth place game.
The award marks the 12th of Fournier's career and second Player of the Week honor of the young season.
Wyckoff was a steady force for the Hoosiers over the weekend, providing rock solid play at the goalkeeper position. She finished the tournament with 39 saves and a steal in 124 minutes of action.
The Los Altos, Calif. native posted double-digit saves in three contests and finished the slate with a 6.45 goals against average.
Wyckoff came up big in the waning moments against Maryland, notching a pair of stops on the Terps final possession to earn the one-goal win for the Hoosiers.
She increased her career saves total to 875 and is within striking distance of the IU all-time record of 891 set by Jessica Goldner in 2005.
The award for Wyckoff is the 12th of her career and the third this season.
