BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University women's golf team opens its 2012 spring slate with a pair of events in Florida, beginning with the IU Spring Challenge on Feb. 18.
The spring kick-off meeting against the Wisconsin Badgers will take place at the River Wilderness Country Club in Parrish, Fla. The one-day event will be played as a Nassau, with each pairing having the opportunity to win three points -- one for low score on the front nine, one for low score on the back nine, and one for low score for the round.
The teams last matched up in 2010 in Arizona, with Indiana taking a 9.5-8.5 victory. Junior Rosie Davies, junior Kate Coons, freshman Elizabeth Tong, senior Kristtini Cain, junior Pamela Burneski and sophomore Sophie Hayashi will take part in the event.
Two days later IU will officially begin the season with the Central District Invitational, hosted by Michigan State at the River Wilderness Country Club on Feb. 20 and 21. Indiana finished 13th in the event last season, with Cain finishing tied for 41st. Davies also took part in the tournament, placing tied for 72nd.
Davies finished the fall season as the top Hoosier in stroke average (76.00) and had the low round of the fall with a 68. She finished with two top-10 finishes, highlighted by medalist honors at the IU Fall Kickoff.
Cain posted a 76.42 stroke average in 14 rounds of play, posting a team-best four top-25 finishes. Tong had a strong start to her collegiate career with three top-25 finishes, including a tie for eighth at the Lady Northern Invitational, site of the 2012 Big Ten Championships.
Coons and Burneski both played all 14 rounds in the fall, with the duo posting an identical tie for ninth at the IU Fall Kickoff for their top performance. Hayashi had one top-25 finish in 11 rounds of action, finishing tied for 14th at the IU Fall Kickoff.
After Florida the Hoosiers will return to action over spring break at the Lady Jaguar Classic in Georgia (March 16-18). That is followed by the Mountain View Collegiate (March 23-24) the IU Invitational at the IU Golf Course (April 14-15) and the Big Ten Championship, April 27-29 in French Lick, Ind.
