NEW ORLEANS, La. - Clean defense and solid pitching was not enough Friday night for Indiana Baseball (2-2), coming up just short in a 3-2 road loss at Tulane (5-1). The Green Wave scored all three runs in the first inning and held on for the win.

Junior second baseman Michael Basil was responsible for two of Indiana's three hits in the game, slapping a double to left in the fourth inning. Chris Sujka also connected on a two-bagger, late scoring a run on a head-first slide into home. Centerfielder Justin Cureton drove in a run and made both a diving and sliding catch defensively.

After Tulane notched three runs in the bottom of the first, the Hoosier pitching staff locked it down with eight straight scoreless innings. Matt Dearden made his third appearance of the season, surrendering a lone hit in 1.2 innings of work. Drew Leininger then came on for the final 2.1 innings of no-hit baseball.

For the year, Dearden has gone 5 2/3 innings with no runs, just two hits and six strikeouts. Leininger, meanwhile, owns a 1.80 ERA in his two relief outings.

Trace Knoblauch opened the third inning by drawing a walk, becoming Indiana's first baserunner of the evening. He then scooted over to third off a Sujka double down the left-field line. Sujka turned on a fast ball, pulling the pitch and curving it around third base and ending up in the left-field corner. A Cureton groundball scored Knoblauch and Sujka later dove underneath an attempted tag at the dish to pull IU within a run at 3-2, the eventual final score.

Both squads loaded the bases up in the fourth frame, but neither were able to squeeze across any runners. In total, the Hoosier pitching staff buckled down to strand nine Tulane baserunners on the night.
