PEORIA, Ariz. - Strong rounds from top to bottom in the lineup have propelled the Indiana University women's golf team into fourth place after two rounds of the Westbrook Invitational at the Westbrook Village Golf Club in Peoria, Ariz.
Illinois leads the field with a score of 570. Texas Tech is second (572), followed by Washington State (579), Indiana (287-294/581) and Iowa (584). The 12-team event concludes with 18 holes on Monday.
"I am very proud of our performance," said head coach Clint Wallman. "They put together two really solid rounds today."
Senior Kristtini Cain posted back-to-back under-par rounds and is tied for fourth with a score of 140. Cain led the Hoosiers in round one with a 3-under 69. That is the second-lowest round by a Hoosier this season just one off Rosie Davies' 68 recorded at the Mary Fossum Invitational. She came back in round two with a 1-under 71 and is set to make a run at her first tournament title as a Hoosier.
"Kristtini has been on the verge of really good numbers and we saw that today," Wallman said. "Kristtini, along with everyone else, has done a lot of work with her putter and she did a fantastic job with that."
Freshman Elizabeth Tong finds herself on the cusp of the top-10 with a tally of 145, placing her tied for 12th. Tong recorded her second under-par round of the season in round one with a 1-under 71 in the first round. That was followed by a 3-over 74 for the second 18 holes.
Junior Pamela Burneski is the third Hoosier sitting in the top 20, tied for 17th with a score of 146. Burneski started the day with an even-par 72, making it two-straight par rounds for the junior. She came back in the second round with a 2-over 74 for her best 36-hole score of the season
Junior Rosie Davies is tied for 46th with a score of 152. Davies was 5-over after round one, posting a 77. She shaved two strokes off that total in the second round, coming into the clubhouse with a 75.
Also tied for 46th is junior Kate Coons. Coons found herself three over par after the first round with a 3-over 75. That was followed by a 77 in round two.
Sophomore Sophie Hayashi is playing as a individual and sits tied for 63rd after 36 holes. Hayashi 's first round score of 81 was disqualified. The second round saw Hayashi take two strokes off that tally, posting a 79 for a two-round total of 160.
"Heading into tomorrow we can't really get ahead of ourselves and start worrying about the outcome," Wallman said. "We need to pay attention to the things that got us here and the rest will take care of itself."
