TROY, N.Y. - The No. 11 Indiana Hoosiers women's water polo team (11-4, 1-1 CWPA West) was defeated by Maryland, 9-8, on Sunday in CWPA Western Division play at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The Hoosiers held an early three goal lead, but the Terps came back to get the win in a game that featured five ties and three lead changes.
Sophomore Shae Fournier scored four goals to lead the Indiana offense, marking her sixth game of the season with at least four goals. The Winnipeg, Manitoba native also surpassed the 100 career goals plateau with 104. Senior goalkeeper Cassie Wyckoff had eight saves and a steal in the cage during a complete 32 minutes of action.
Both defenses dominated the early portions of the contest until Maryland got on the board with 2:29 to play in the opening period, scoring on a skip shot to take the 1-0 lead. The Hoosiers came back a minute later with a power play score by Fournier after a cross pass from freshman Nina Escobedo to knot things up heading into the second quarter.
Indiana went on a three-goal run to open the second stanza, scoring the trio of goals in a span of 2:22 with goals by Fournier, McNaught, and Eimstad to take a 4-1 advantage.
McNaught helped ignite the run by earning a five-meter penalty, which Fournier converted for the goal. McNaught followed up with a long-range score after receiving a pass from Jones in the post. The fourth IU marker was notched by Eimstad on a power play after a Shelby Taylor dish.
The Terps responded with three consecutive goals of their own in the final four minutes of the period to tie the game at 4-4 heading into the break.
The Hoosiers regained the lead early in the third with a power play goal by Jones on the Fournier assist. Maryland came back with the equalizer on a six-on-five score of their own two minutes later to tie it 5-5.
Taylor found an open Fournier near the midway point of the third during another Indiana power play to give the Hoosiers their final lead of the contest. The Cream and Crimson finished the game 5-for-6 on power play chances, along with one five-meter penalty conversion.
Maryland countered late in the third with two goals to grab a 7-6 lead going into the fourth.

The Terps came up with a crucial counter that led to a five-meter penalty with 1:29 to play, which they converted to take the late lead. Maryland followed that up with a power play score with 27 seconds to play to take a two-goal lead.
Fournier came up with a late goal for the Hoosiers, but it was not enough as the Terps controlled the ball for the remainder of the contest.
