BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana head field hockey coach Amy Robertson has announced the signing of four to the 2012 roster: Mollie Getzfread (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.), Brigitta Haller (Hudson, Ohio), Rachel Stauffer (Ephrata, Pa.) and Sydney Supica (Ann Arbor, Mich.).
"Our four 2012 signees are a very well balanced group of young women who have the ability to make an immediate positive impact," said Robertson. "We were looking for the right people who had the intangibles that match the values of our program and possessed the athleticism and skill to be successful in the Big Ten. This group shares one common attribute and that is that they have a passion for hockey and a passion for striving for personal and team growth. I feel very fortunate that these incredible people are joining our program. I am confident that they will represent our program with integrity and distinction on and off the field."
Getzfread, a 5-1 midfielder, earned First Team All-League and All-Area her sophomore, junior and senior seasons, while being named First Team All-State her junior and senior years at Plymouth Whitemarsh. She was the Most Valuable Player of her team as a junior and senior and earned the Hustle Award as sophomore. She led her high school team to the district playoffs in three of her four years. Getzfread also lettered in lacrosse and swimming. The daughter of Joe and Mimi Getzfread intends to major in biology at IU.
"We have been watching Mollie grow in her game over the past few years," said Robertson. "She has always been a player who gives 110 percent, is eager to learn and every year she has improved her skill level and her game awareness. She possesses the tools to be a top Big Ten player. She is a fast, fit and hard working athlete who will fit very easily into our style of play."
Haller, a 5-5 midfielder/defender, was a three-time First Team Northeast Ohio honoree and the 2011 Northeast Ohio Player of the Year after leading Hudson to the district semi-finals in her senior campaign and recording 17 goals and nine assists. She was also a three-time scholar-athlete and led her team to the Northeast Ohio District title with an 18-1 season as a freshman, semi-finals as a sophomore and finals as a junior. Haller's team medaled at the National Futures Championships in 2009 and 2011, and earned a silver medal at the Junior Olympics in 2009. The four-year letterwinner is the daughter of Herb and Margaret Haller. Her father Herb is a 1989 Indiana University alum and captain of IU's men's soccer team that won a National Championship in 1988. Haller intends to major in nursing at Indiana.
"Brigitta is a very versatile player who possesses a lot of composure and awareness in her game," Robertson said. "She has great distribution skills in her small and big game and will contribute on our back and midfield lines. She is one of the best prospects coming out of Ohio this year."
Stauffer, a 5-2 forward, was named a Lancaster Lebanon League First Team All-Star and Offensive MVP, along with earning all-state honors for Ephrata her senior season after recording nine goals and 23 assists. She was a First Team All-Star as a junior and offensive MPV as a sophomore. The four-year letterwinner also played lacrosse, basketball and ran track. In 2011, she spent the summer playing Barcelona with Sport Euro Tour and also led the Blue Mountain team to a gold medal at the Keystone Summer games with six goals and three assists. The daughter of Donna Stauffer intends to major in criminal justice at IU.
"We only became aware of Rachel last fall and from the first time I watched her play to a couple months later, she had already improved her overall game," said Robertson. "She has the right attitude, work ethic and desire to improve and when combined with her speed, power, natural athletic ability and skill level her potential is really unlimited. She will help step into a void on our forward line that is left with the graduation of two great players."
Supica, a 5-3 defender/midfielder recorded 15 goals and 15 assists at Pioneer in 2011. She led her team to a state title in 2009 and was the runners-up in 2010 and 2011. The two-time team MVP was a First Team All-State as a junior and senior and a National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-Region Team selection. The three-time letterwinner is the daughter of Scott Supica and intends to major in psychology at IU.
"The first thing that stood out to me when I met Sydney was her amazing outlook on life and her passion for hockey and for being a part of a great team," Robertson said. "She is the kind of student-athlete that will constantly search for ways to make a greater contribution to her team. She will make an impact in our backfield and plays with maturity, awareness and reads the game very well."
