BOISE, Idaho - Indiana's men's track and field team finished sixth at the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships with 25 points, finishing just two points out of the top five and as the top team from the Big Ten. IU is a top-10 team for the third straight year at the indoor championships. Sophomore Darius King finished tied for second in the men's high jump to lead the way for IU on the final day. Andy Bayer took fifth in the mile, and the 4x400m relay finished eighth.
King cleared a career-best 2.23m (7-3.75) to tie for second place in the high jump in the first national meet of his career. The clearance ranks third in IU history. The sophomore caps his season with an NCAA Runner-Up finish to go along with his Big Ten title. King's finish marks the fourth-straight NCAA Indoor Championships where IU has had a men's high jumper finish in the top two, as Derek Drouin was second in 2009 and won in 2010 and 2011.
Bayer took fifth in the mile, clocking a time of 4:02.13, which was less than half a second out of the win. The junior is IU's first All-American in the event since Sean and John Jefferson were second and seventh in 2005. The finish is his sixth All-America finish in indoor track and field (two in this meet) and the seventh of his career (cross country in 2011).
The 4x400m relay team of Chris Vaughn, Nick Stoner, Ryan Hindes and Kind Butler took eighth place with a time of 3:10.75. IU earns All-America honors in the event for the first time since 1988 and the fourth time in school history. The Hoosiers take second-team All-America honors. Vaughn opened with a split of 47.48 seconds and Stoner followed with a 48.43. Hindes ran 48.14 and Butler closed out in 46.71. The time is the fourth fastest in IU history.
Bayer also took second-team All-America honors in the 3,000m in 15th place. Ben Hubers finished 14th in the 3K with a time of 8:13.74. He claimed second team honors as well. Bayer finished in 8:16.95.
In the triple jump, Olu Olamigoke finished 13th with a mark of 15.56m (51-0.75). The senior earned second-team All-America honors in his first national meet.
