Third Quarter Barrage Leads Hoosiers Past Marist, 10-6

REDLANDS, Calif. - The No. 12 Indiana Hoosiers women's water polo team (18-4, 1-1 CWPA West) used a four-goal third quarter run to separate from Marist and earn the 10-6 victory at the University of Redlands.
Freshman Summer Creighton keyed the surge, scoring a hat trick in a span of 1:05 during the third period. Freshman Colleen McNaught also posted a hat trick for the Hoosiers. The trio of goals for each tied a career-high. Sophomore Shae Fournier notched two goals, while freshman Alexis Jones and sophomore Meghan Lappan had one goal apiece.
Senior goalkeeper Cassie Wyckoff recorded 10 saves, a steal, and an assist during a complete 32 minutes of action.
McNaught got the Hoosiers started early, finding the back of the net on the first shot attempt of the contest after an assist by Creighton.
Marist answered with a power play goal two minutes later to knot things up at 1-1.
Fournier went on a two-goal run late in the opening period, beginning with a five-meter penalty conversion after earning the foul on a breakaway. She followed it up with a counter-attack goal after a long dish from Wyckoff to put IU in front 3-1. Marist tacked on a long-range score in the final minute of the first to cut the deficit to one.
Both teams exchanged a pair of goals in the second period, with McNaught and Jones scoring for IU to give the Hoosiers a 5-4 lead at the half.
The third quarter was dominated by Creighton and the Hoosiers as the Winter Park, Fla. native unleashed three of the Hoosiers' four goals in the period.
The first score came on a power play when Fournier found an open Creighton for the conversion. Twenty-eight seconds later, Creighton found an opening on a breakaway and finished with a close-range strike. She capped the trifecta with another counter-attack score at the 5:37 mark of the quarter.
Lappan extended the Indiana lead to 9-4 with a nifty lob late in the period. McNaught then rounded out the Indiana scoring in the fourth with a long-range connection on an assist by freshman Nina Escobedo.
Marist added a pair of goal late in the final stanza to bring the final margin to four.
