No. 11 Hoosiers Downed by No. 19 UCSD

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 11 Indiana Hoosiers women's water polo team (19-6, 1-1 CWPA West) fell to No. 19 UC San Diego, 7-6, at the Aztec Invitational on Saturday morning. The Hoosiers were outscored 4-2 in the second half after holding a one-goal lead at the break.
Sophomore Shae Fournier and freshman Colleen McNaught had two goals apiece to pace the Indiana offense. Sophomore Amanda Redfern and freshman Shelby Taylor notched one score each.
Senior goalkeeper Cassie Wyckoff grabbed 12 saves and dished out an assist in the loss.
Both squads exchanged a pair of goals in the opening period with Fournier and McNaught getting the Hoosiers on the board. Fournier's marker came on the opening possession of the contest from long-range, while McNaught capitalized after an drawing an ordinary foul.
The Hoosiers grabbed the second quarter lead at the 3:40 mark when Fournier spun past a defender and delivered a precise pass to an open Redfern in front of the cage for the score. Indiana increased its lead to two minutes later when Wyckoff sent an outlet pass to an open McNaught for the score.
The Tritons answered with a goal late in the quarter to cut the deficit to one at the half. UCSD surged ahead in the third quarter, scoring back-to-back goals with one coming on a power play.
Fournier knotted things up late in the third with a five-meter penalty conversion after McNaught earned the foul.
The Tritons grabbed the lead again in the fourth quarter with a pair of post-up goals and taking a 7-5 lead with 2:15 to play.
The Hoosiers attempted to rally, led by a Taylor power play strike to pull within one with 44 seconds remaining. Indiana followed up with a defensive stop, but a turnover on the final IU possession sealed the game for UCSD.
