SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 11 Indiana Hoosiers women's water polo team (19-7, 1-1 CWPA West) fell behind early on against No. 8 San Diego State and could not recover, falling 7-2 to the host Aztecs.
The freshmen duo of Katie Contreras and Shelby Taylor notched the two Indiana goals.
Senior goalkeeper Cassie Wyckoff registered seven saves and two steals in 32 minutes.
After a scoreless opening six minutes, the Aztecs got on the board at the 2:00 mark with a power play goal. The Hoosiers got a power play of their own late in the period, but a turnover led to a quick SDSU score to grab the 2-0 lead.
The Aztecs notched a goal near two-meters early in the second quarter to take a three-goal lead.
The Hoosiers got on the board at the 5:40 mark of the second stanza with a Taylor goal after a dish from freshman Nina Escobedo to cut the lead to two.
San Diego State notched a five-meter goal near the midway point of the quarter. That score was the first of four consecutive goals for the Aztecs as they surged ahead by six in the early portion of the fourth period.
Contreras notched the last score of the contest, converting on a power play on Escobedo's second assist of the game.
