THORNTON, Colo. - Fueled by a five-goal fourth quarter, the No. 13 Indiana Hoosiers women's water polo team (13-4, 1-1 CWPA West) held off Cal State East Bay on Sunday at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center.
The Hoosiers were led by a pair of hat tricks from sophomore Shae Fournier and freshman Alynn Reade. The trio of goals by Reade marked a career-best for the Calgary, Alberta native. Freshmen Nina Escobedo and Shelby Taylor notched one goal apiece.
Senior goalkeeper Cassie Wyckoff recorded eight saves in a complete 32 minutes of action.
The Hoosiers trailed 1-0 at the end of the opening quarter with the East Bay goal coming on a power play.
The Pioneers added a long-range goal at the 5:36 mark of the second period to grab a two-goal lead.
Taylor got the Hoosiers on the board 16 seconds later with a strike from deep. Reade notched the tying goal near the end of the half, collecting a missed shot and putting it in from near two-meters.
The Indiana defense controlled the third quarter, shutting out the Pioneers and gaining their first lead of the contest on a nifty lob shot from Fournier.
Reade gave the Hoosiers a 4-2 lead early in the fourth on a power play goal with the assist from Taylor. Indiana was a perfect three-for-three on power play chances in the fourth period, to go along with a five-meter score.
After the Pioneers pulled within one at the 6:55 mark, Indiana responded with three consecutive goals to secure momentum. Fournier scored the first two goals during the IU run. The first came after Reade earned an exclusion, dished to freshman Colleen McNaught, who then found Fournier for the open shot.
Sophomore Meghan Lappan earned a timely five-meter penalty 33 seconds later and Fournier rifled it in to give the Hoosiers a 6-3 lead with 6:02 to play. Reade extended the Hoosier lead to four with a backhand after the assist by Fournier.
The Pioneers pulled within three with 3:38 remaining, but Escobedo came right back with a power play conversion after a dish by freshman Katie Contreras. East Bay tacked on a late goal with a lob, but the game was in hand for the Cream and Crimson.
