BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University senior Kristtini Cain won her first individual title and the Hoosiers posted a seven-stroke victory at their own IU Invitational Sunday at the IU Golf Course.
Due to weather, the tournament was shortened to an 18-hole event, with all but two or three holes played on Sunday.
Indiana posted a 298, with Ball State the runner-up at 305. Eastern Michigan was just a stroke back in third (306), followed by Kansas State (307) and IUPUI (310) in the top five.
"Today was a really challenging day for us," said head coach Clint Wallman. "We started play yesterday, then stopped play and never really got into any sort of rhythm. I am really proud of the girls for re-grouping and getting on the golf course and enduring a rugged start. The conditions were very hard with the wind and soft grass but really hung in there and put the pedal down on the back nine to post some really good numbers."
Cain won her title after a three-hole playoff with teammate Kate Coons, Ball State's Jenna Hague and IUPUI's Lauren Kuss after all posted a 1-over 73. Coons was eliminated after the first hole, with Cain, Hague and Kuss posting pars on the par-4 17th hole. The three then moved to the 18th hole, where Hague and Cain posted a bogey and Kuss was eliminated.
On the third playoff hole, Cain hit her tee shot down the middle of the fairway, with her second shot just short of the green. The senior nearly picked up an eagle, chipping her third shot to within inches of the hole, but settled for a birdie to win her first individual title as a Hoosier.
"I am really excited for Kristtini," Wallman said. "Any time you win a tournament, that is special. But to be a senior and win your home tournament is something really special."
The Hoosier top five all finished in the top 20, with freshman Elizabeth Tong placing tied for seventh with a 3-over 75. Juniors Rosie Davies and Pamela Burneski tied for 16th with rounds of 77.
Playing as individuals, sophomore Sophie Hayashi finished tied for 28th (78) and freshman Kamryn Klawitter tied for 69th with an 84.
Indiana returns to action April 27-29 at the Big Ten Championships, held this year on the Donald Ross Course at the French Lick Resort in French Lick, Ind.
