TORONTO - IU signee Sam Monette is the Canadian Under-18 national champion. Last week, the Repentigny, Quebec native won national titles in singles and doubles. The third time proved to be the charm, as he played for the singles title a year ago at both the indoor and outdoor national events.
Monette captured the title with a 7-6(6), 6-0 win over Canada's second-ranked player. The first set was a battle between the two competitors, both members of Tennis Canada's National Training Centre in Montreal. Even through eight games, the opponent broke Monette for the opportunity to serve for the set before Monette returned the favor. In the tiebreak, Monette saved a set point for his opponent with a huge ace before closing it out. The second set went much quicker, and Monette capitalized to secure the title.
Monette went home with two trophies, as he also picked up the doubles title a day earlier. He and a partner defeated the top doubles pair from British Columbia 6-2, 6-1.
