BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana Baseball (16-21) came out on the wrong end of a 21-4 final score against #22 Louisville (26-11) on Tuesday. The Cardinals take a one-game edge, 20-19, in the all-time series between the two institutions.
Following a pair of Louisville runs in the top of the second, Indiana chased the Cardinal starting pitcher, Jared Ruxer,s out of the game in the home half. The Hoosiers cranked out four consecutive hits to plate three runs and grab a 3-2 lead. Ruxer, a native of Indianapolis, entered the game with a 5-0 record and 1.98 ERA. In eight appearances, including six starts, he had not let up more than two earned runs in an outing. Will Nolden's RBI-single through the left side notched IU's third earned run against the native Hoosier. Chad Clark and Trace Knoblauch also drove in runs.
Virtually everything went in favor of Louisville from that point, however. The Cardinals scored multiple runs in five of the next seven innings. The Big East foe tallied 15 hits, but also had plenty of assistance from the Cream and Crimson. Indiana handed out 18 free passes (11 walks, seven HBPs) at the plate, 12 on the basepaths (nine wild pitches, two passed balls, a balk) in addition to three defensive errors.
Danny Sader connected with an outside fastball in the eighth, pushing the pitch into center field to score Indiana's fourth run. Sader's run-scoring poke marked the third Hoosier hit of the inning.
Indiana continues its current nine-game homestand this weekend, hosting Georgia Southern in a three-game set starting on Friday at 3:05 pm.
