Hoosiers Receive NCAA Tournament Bid

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
The Indiana Hoosiers men's golf team (No. 28 Golfstat, No. 33 Golfweek/Sagarin) has earned a coveted bid to the 2012 NCAA Tournament and will compete in the Greensboro Regional on May 17-19 at the Grandover Resort (East Course) in Greensboro, N.C. The Hoosiers will compete as the No. 5 seed in the region.
Head coach Mike Mayer and the Hoosiers have earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament as a team in eight of the past nine seasons, as well as advancing individuals in two campaigns to mark 10 straight years that IU Men's Golf has been represented in the postseason.
"We fully expected to get a bid and it's nice to be a five seed in this event," said Mayer. "We want to get back on the golf course and show them what we can do. There are great teams in every region. We'll spend the next week really preparing for the golf course and getting ready to compete in Greensboro."
Six 54-hole regional tournaments will be conducted on May 17-19. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals.
The NCAA Championship will be held on May 29-June 3 at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
The Cream and Crimson are among a 14-team field in Greensboro that includes, in order of seeds (Golfstat ranking in parentheses): Auburn (4), UNLV (7), Florida (17), Duke (20), Indiana (28), Liberty (32), SMU (40), Texas Tech (43), Tulsa (53), Lamar (56), Louisiana-Lafayette (62), Charlotte (72), George Washington (166), and Mount St. Mary's (241).
The Hoosiers enter the postseason after a successful campaign that included a pair of tournament titles. Indiana displayed a remarkable consistency this season, recording top-4 team finishes in eight of nine stroke play events.
