David Mills Begins Play at U.S. Amateur Championship Today

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Junior David Mills began play at the U.S. Amateur Championship today (Aug. 13) hosted by Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, Colo.. He tees off at 1:35 p.m. MT (3:35 p.m. ET) along side Barry Dyche and Gary Nicklaus, the son of golfing legend Jack Nicklaus, on CommonGround Golf Course.
"David Mills has had an outstanding summer of tournament play and this without question the highlight. To have the opportunity to play in U.S. Amateur Championship is a tremendous honor and I know that he will represent himself and IU Men's Golf very well.
The Championship is open to amateur golfers who hold a USGA Handicap Index® not exceeding 2.4. The USGA accepted 6,443 entires in 2012. Those players then compete in sectional qualifying tournaments, consisting of 36 holes, between July 14 and Aug. 1. Those that advance from the sectional qualifying are the ones that make up the 312 players at the Championship this week.
The Championship tournament starts with a field of 312 golfers and is trimmed to the top 64 following two days of stroke play. The 64 then play single-elimination match play that ends with a 36-hole match for the championship.

Mills, a native of Evansville, Ind., will enter his junior campaign with the fifth lowest career scoring average in program history (73.55). He fired a four-round score of 292 at the Big Ten Championships to finish fourth place and earn a spot on the All-Tournament team. He was a First Team All-Big Ten performer and was named to the PING All-Midwest Region team following his superb sophomore season.
