Captains Clutch To Win Season Opener

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Indiana Volleyball (1-0) starts the 2012 season with a win, knocking off Stony Brook in four sets (25-20, 25-13, 26-28, 25-23) at the Black Knight Invitational. The Hoosiers got big points late from captains Jordan Haverly and Kelci Marschall to win four-straight points for the match.
Haverly, Morgan Leach and Jade Henderson led the way for the Hoosiers. Haverly had 15 kills to lead the Hoosiers, and Leach and Henderson both added 13. Samantha Thrower was the fourth Hoosier with double-digit kills, tallying 10th. Haverly had a double double in her return from a knee injury that held her out in 2011, adding a team-high 15 digs as well.
Katie Gallagher added 54 assists in her collegiate debut to go along with 14 digs, tallying a double double. Leach had five blocks and Henderson and Thrower each had four rejections, with IU finishing with 12. Caitlin Hansen had 11 digs in her debut as the IU libero.
In set number one, the Hoosiers pulled away late to win 25-20. Henderson and Jordan Haverly both tallied four kills in the set, with Henderson adding two service aces and a block as well. Leach and Marschall each added three kills in the first set as well.
In the second, the Hoosiers took over, winning 25-13 and tallying 14 kills to just six for the Sea Wolves. Leach, Thrower and freshman Amelia Anderson were all a flawless three for three with three kills on three swings in the set. Henderson added three kills as well.
In the third, the Hoosiers led 21-18 before Stony Brook battled back to take it 28-26. Leach had five kills to go along with four from Henderson and Haverly. Haverly added nine digs in the set as well. The Sea Wolves rode a hot Melissa Rigo late in the set as the freshman had six kills, three aces and seven digs in the set.
Set four proved eerily familiar to the third, as IU charged out to a 19-16 lead and saw Stony Brook battle back to take a 23-21 lead. A timeout from head coach Sherry Dunbar seemed to turn the tide of the match, as IU scored four straight to win the match. Captains Haverly and Marschall and six and four kills respectively in the final set. The matched was closed with a Gallagher ace, the first of her career.
