Bloomington, Ind. - Indiana freshman Sydney Supica was named Big Ten Freshman Player of the Week by the conference office today, Aug. 28 after helping the IU field hockey team to back-to-back season opening wins over Kent State and Vermont last weekend.
The Ann Arbor, Mich. native played an integral part in the Hoosiers’ defensive effort that allowed only three goals on 24 shots over the weekend. The freshman played in all 140 minutes of action over two games, leading Indiana’s backfield to a shutout victory against Vermont. The award is a first for the freshman and is the first weekly honor for an IU rookie since Maggie Olson won the weekly award on Sept. 27, 2011.
The Hoosiers will host their home opener this Friday, August 31 against Missouri State at 4 p.m. ET.
