SETTING THE SCENE • The Hoosiers open their six-game Big Ten slate with the Ohio State Buckeyes in Columbus.
• Indiana is aiming for its 15th Big Ten regular season title. The Hoosiers last won the conference crown in 2010. • The match will be shown live on the Big Ten Network. It is one of two regular-season appearances on the BTN for the Hoosiers.
• IU won last year's meeting, 1-0 in Bloomington. • Indiana has never lost in its Big Ten opener, going 18-0-3 in those matches.
• Indiana is 2-0 in Sunday matches this season.
NEWS AND NOTES
• Indiana remains undefeated at home at 2-0-1 with a 2-0 win over No. 22 SIUE on Sept. 14. • The Hoosiers managed just one shot in the first half but came back with second-half goals from defender Caleb Konstanski and midfielder Jacob Bushue.
• Konstanski's second goal of the season and first game winner came off an A.J. Corrado corner kick in the 56th minute. • The kick reached the head of Bushue, who flicked the ball on to Konstanski. The senior managed to put it home off his thigh.
• Bushue's goal in the 71st minute also came as the result of a corner kick. Corrado's kick bounced in the six-yard box off Eriq Zavaleta. • It then made its way through a few SIUE defenders before Bushue blasted home a shot from 10 yards out.
• Senior goalkeeper Luis Soffner recorded his Big Ten-leading fourth shutout of the season. • The win is IU's first over a ranked opponent this season. They are 1-1 against teams in the NSCAA top-25.
• Indiana came back from a two-goal deficit for its 3-2 win over Oregon State on Sept. 9. The last time IU came back from a two-goal deficit was Oct. 31, 2010 against Northwestern. • Trailing 2-0 after the 46th minute, the Hoosiers put up three unanswered goals in regulation to win the Big Ten regular season title.
• Indiana had its scoreless streak 377 minutes snapped by Akron on Sept. 7 with a goal at 18:36 in the match. • Zavaleta has two multiple-goal games already this season (vs. Cincinnati, vs. Clemson) and is more than halfway to matching his 2011 goal total with six in seven matches this season.
• Indiana's three-match shutout streak (Cincinnati, Clemson, San Diego State) matched its longest shutout string of the 2011 season (at St. John's, at Rutgers, vs. Penn State).
SCOUTING THE BUCKEYES
• Ohio State is 3-4-1 on the season, coming off a 4-0 loss at Louisville on Sept. 18. • The Buckeyes have posted wins over Davidson (3-2, OT), San Diego State (2-1) and DePaul (2-1).
• OSU has 10 goals on the season, with two each from Louie Berra, Sebastian Rivas, Kenny Cunningham and Alex Bujenovic. • Alex Ivanov and Alex Wimmer have split time in goal, with Ivanov appearing in three matches, allowing five goals for a 1.52 GAA. Wimmer has played 450 minutes in five matches, allowing 11 scores for a 2.20 GAA with 24 saves. Ivanov is 1-1-1 on the season, while Wimmer is 2-3.
• Ohio State is 2-1-1 in matches at home this season. • Head coach John Bluem is in his 16th season at Ohio State. He is assisted by Frank Speth and Taly Goode.
SERIES HISTORY • Indiana leads the series 36-4-3 since the Hoosiers became a varsity program in 1973.
• Three of Indiana's four losses in the series have come since 2008. Two of the four losses came in the 2009 season. • The Hoosiers are 17-2 in matches played in Columbus.
• Nikita Kotlov had the game-winning goal in the 45th minute last year in Bloomington. • Four of the last five meetings between the teams have resulted in a 1-0 score line.

BIG TEN DOMINATION • Since the Big Ten began sponsoring men's soccer in 1991, the Hoosier have dominated the league.
• The Hoosiers are 90-15-12 in regular season matches, tallying 30+ more victories than second-place team Penn State (57). • Indiana has never lost in its Big Ten opener, going 18-0-3 in those matches.
• IU has won 11 Big Ten tournament titles, sharing the 1995 crown with Wisconsin. • Indiana has also been crowned regular season champion 14 times, including nine-straight seasons from 1996-2004. IU won back-to-back regular season titles in 2006 and 2007 and re-claimed the regular season crown in 2010.
• Indiana has been the league's goals-against average leader in 15 of 19 seasons, including 2007 when the Hoosiers allowed just two goals in six matches for a 0.31 GAA. • IU has had a league-record 11 Big Ten Players of the Year, including three of the last five seasons. Will Bruin won the award in 2010.
• The Hoosiers have also boasted the Freshman of the Year three of the last five years. Eriq Zavaleta won the award in 2011.
BUSHUE, KONSTANSKI EARN BIG TEN HONORS
• After Friday's 2-0 win over No. 22 SIUE, midfielder Jacob Bushue was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, while defender Caleb Konstanski was named the co-Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. • Bushue tallied his first goal of the season with a strike in the 71st minute that gave Indiana a 2-0 lead. He also played a part in the game-winning goal, flicking the ball on to Konstanski for the score.
• He was also named to the Soccer America Team of the Week. • Konstanski's second goal of the season was also his first game winner. He gave Indiana a 1-0 lead over SIUE in the 56th minute, corralling the ball from Bushue on a play that began with a corner kick from A.J. Corrado. The center back also played a key defensive role in the Hoosiers' fourth shutout in seven matches this season. Konstanski shares the defensive award with Wisconsin's Chase Rau.
• It is the second time this year the Hoosiers have swept POW honors (Sept. 3: Zavaleta/Soffner).
SECOND-HALF STANDOUTS
• Indiana has been a slow starter this season with just two first-half goals. But when it comes to the second half, watch out. • The Hoosiers have scored 11 of their 13 goals in the second half, while allowing zero goals in the same time frame.
• IU is out-shooting its opponents 61-36 in second-half action, while the Hoosiers and their opponents have both taken 35 shots in the first half of play. • When it comes to overtime, Indiana has out-shot its opponents 4-1 in the extra time.
ZA-VA-LE-TA • There are no worries about a sophomore slump for Eriq Zavaleta. After tallying 10 goals as a freshman in 2010 and earning Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors, the sophomore has gotten off to a strong start in 2012.
• Zavaleta has six goals in seven matches this season, including multiple goal efforts vs. Cincinnati (2) and Clemson (2). • Last season Zavaleta did not score his sixth goal until the 13th match of the year.
• He is currently on pace for an 18-goal season, which would match Will Bruin's 2010 campaign where he finished runner-up for the MAC Hermann Trophy. • Zavaleta is an efficient scorer with his six goals coming on just 25 shot attempts.
• He is also efficient in his shot selection, with 14 of his 25 attempts on goal (56 %). • Zavaleta has two of the team's five game-winning goals this season.
• He currently leads the Big Ten in shots (25), shots per game (3.57), points (12), points per game (1.71), goals (6), goals per game (0.86) and game-winning goals (2).
SOFFNER TAKES A HARD LINE
• Senior goalkeeper Luis Soffner is off to the best start of his career in 2012. • In seven matches Soffner has posted four shutouts and had a streak of 377 scoreless minutes so far this season.
• Indiana has allowed just four goals this season, tied for the fewest among Big Ten teams, with Soffner playing all 650 minutes in goal this year. • Named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 2 after a pair of shutouts over Clemson and San Diego State, Soffner leads the Big Ten in shutouts (4) and saves (26). He is second in goals-against average (0.55), save percentage (.867) and shutouts per game (0.57).
TEAM CAPTAINS • Senior goalkeeper Luis Soffner and senior defender Caleb Konstanski were both named team captains for the 2012 season.
• Soffner is in his fifth season at IU, starting 66 of 67 matches played in goal. • Konstanski is a fourth-year senior, having started 53 of 59 matches. He has made 29-consecutive starts for the Hoosiers.
INDIANA IN THE POLLS • Indiana climbed one spot to No. 15 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) rankings.
• The Hoosiers moved back up two spots to No. 14 in the Soccer America poll. • Indiana moved up one spot to No. 8 in the Top Drawer Soccer Tournament 48 and remained at No. 13 in the College Soccer News Top 25.
• The Hoosiers remain at No. 13 in the Soccer Times poll.
HOOSIERS IN THE BIG TEN (as of 9/18)
• Indiana is tied for the conference lead in wins with a 5-1-1 record. • The team currently ranks first in the conference in goals (13), goals per game (1.86), goals allowed (4), goals-against average (0.55) and corner kicks (50).
• Sophomore Eriq Zavaleta leads the league in shots (25), shots per game (3.57), points (12), points per game (1.71), goals (6), goals per game (0.86) and game-winning goals (2). • Goalkeeper Luis Soffner leads the conference in shutouts (4) and saves (26) and is second in goals-against average (0.55) and save percentage (.867).
INDIANA ON TV • The Indiana University men's soccer team is scheduled to have two of its regular season matches broadcast on the Big Ten Network in 2012.
• Indiana will have its Sept. 23 Big Ten opener at Ohio State and its Nov. 1 Big Ten finale against Northwestern shown on the Big Ten Network. • The Hoosiers vs. Buckeyes telecast will be shown live on Sunday, Sept. 23 at 1 p.m. ET.
• IU's matchup vs.. Northwestern in the regular season finale will also be shown live on Thursday, Nov. 1 at 8 p.m. ET. • The Big Ten Network will also show the semifinal and final matches of the Big Ten Tournament in Evanston, Ill.
• In addition, the Hoosiers' preseason game against Chivas de Guadalajara on Aug. 18 was shown live on Fox Soccer Channel. • Indiana's matches vs. SIUE (Sept. 14), Notre Dame (Sept. 26), Butler (Oct. 16), Michigan (Oct. 19) and Evansville (Oct. 24) will be shown live on BigTenNetwork.com
