BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Coming off a 1-0-1 weekend with a pair of shutouts in the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic, sophomore forward Eriq Zavaleta was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, while senior goalkeeper Luis Soffner took home Defensive Player of the Week honors, the conference office announced today.
Zavaleta earns the award for the second time in as many weeks after tallying a pair of goals in Indiana's 3-0 win over Clemson on Friday. His second game-winning goal of the season came less than two minutes into the match against the Tigers as he headed home a throw-in from junior Nikita Kotlov. Zavaleta rounded out the scoring with his fifth goal of the season as he blasted home a rebound off the cross bar.
In Sunday's 0-0 tie with San Diego State, Zavaleta had six shot attempts, five of which were on frame.
Soffner picks up his first honor of the season after posting a pair of clean sheets against Clemson and San Diego State. Soffner had a pair of saves in the 3-0 win over the Tigers, while adding four saves in a 0-0 tie with San Diego State.
Soffner has posted three-straight shutouts, not allowing a goal over the last 358:25 minutes of play.
Indiana is back in action this weekend as it travels to the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament in South Bend, Ind. The Hoosiers face No. 7 Akron on Friday at 5 p.m., followed by Oregon State on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
