BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's tennis team finished its strong weekend in style on Sunday at the Adidas IU Winter Invite going 6-0 in doubles on the day. For the weekend, the Hoosiers went 13-2 in singles play and 14-3 in doubles action.
Sunday's play consisted of two rounds of doubles. IU's Sophie Garre and Alecia Kauss teamed together to top Marquette's Aleeza Kanner and Erin Gebes, 8-2, and later the Hoosier duo defeated Missouri's Cierre Gaytan-Leach and Elisha Gabb in a tight one, 9-8 (6).
Sophomores Carolyn Chupa and Katie Klyczek also won two doubles matches. The first win came over Ana Pimienta and Ali Dawson from Marquette, 8-4. Their second win came over MU's Pimienta and Erin Gebes, 8-2.
Indiana's Gabrielle Rubenstein and Jithme Jayawickrema kept the day perfect for IU as they were dominant over Marquette's Rocio Diaz and Aina Hernandez Soler, 8-0. They then took care of Bowling Green's Mary Hill and Katie Brozovich, 8-5.
"This is what we needed after five and a half weeks off with no practice and two full months without a match," head coach Lin Loring said. "We played a lot of tennis, hit a lot of balls and got back into a competitive frame of mind. We still have a lot of work to do in doubles, but considering we used about 10 different doubles combinations, I thought we did a good job this weekend. With a solid week of practice I think we will be ready for our dual matches to start next week."
The Hoosiers will open dual play next weekend with a double-header in Cincinnati, Ohio against Miami (OH) and Cincinnati. Play will begin against the RedHawks at 11 a.m. ET.
