BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana field hockey team suffered a 5-1 setback to No. 18 Iowa this afternoon, dropping the Hoosiers to 0-3 in Big Ten play and 6-6 overall.
IU was outshot by the Hawkeyes 22-7 and fired just three shots on goal to Iowa’s 15. The Hoosiers drew just two penalty corners, the first of which not awarded until the 68th minute, while the Hawkeyes earned eight on the day.
Maggie Olson was busy in net this afternoon and made 10 stops for Indiana. It is the second-consecutive game with double-digit saves for the redshirt junior.
Mariella Grote was the lone Hoosier to net a goal in the contest, finding the back of the cage on her lone shot of the game in the 21st minute. The score tied the contest at 1-1, but the Hawkeyes would strike with four more unanswered.
At 31:51 Iowa’s Natalie Cafone put the Hawkeyes ahead, 2-1. After the home team jumped to a 3-1 lead, Indiana drew a penalty stroke in the 50th minute for an opportunity to claw back to within one, but Sydney Supica could not convert on the try, leaving the Iowa lead in tact.
Iowa then tacked on late goals in the 67th and 69th minute for its eventual 5-1 win.
The Hoosiers will remain in Iowa City for one more day to take on Pacific tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 12 at 3 p.m.
