BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana volleyball returns to U-Gym after playing its previous four matches on the road. The Hoosiers will compete with ranked opponents in back-to-back matches for the third time since starting Big Ten play as they host No. 15 Wisconsin and No. 10 Minnesota in Bloomington this weekend.
IU will host the Badgers on Friday, Nov. 1 in its second contest against Wisconsin this season. The Hoosiers recently dropped a 3-1 decision in Madison on Sept. 28. It was during that match that Jordan Haverly became just one of five Hoosiers to accrue 1,500 kills in their career.
On Saturday, Indiana is slated to take on No. 10 Minnesota. The Hoosiers previously met with Minnesota on Sept. 25 in Minneapolis, where IU fell in three sets to the then-ranked No. 9 Gophers.
LAST TIME OUT
Indiana closed out the weekend with a 3-2 win over No. 10 Michigan State last Saturday in the Hoosiers first B1G victory of the season. The win over the Spartans was the first since the 2010 season where the Hoosiers topped MSU 3-2 in Bloomington. The victory is also the first over a ranked opponent since IU defeated No. 17 Purdue on Oct. 16, 2012 and the first over a top-10 squad since the Cream and Crimson upset No. 4-ranked Penn State in U-Gym on Oct. 9, 2010.
IU’s attack featured three players with double-digit kills against MSU including a team-best 19 from Jordan Haverly. The senior’s 19 terminations is a season-high, topping her 16 accrued against Kent State on August 31 earlier in the year. Haverly hit at a .250 clip in the match, with an impressive .417 mark in the opening set. Morgan Leach tallied 15 kills in her fifth double-digit effort in the past seven matches, while Amelia Anderson added 10 kills on the attack. Megan Tallman handed out 52 assists, while Taylor Lebo recorded a career-high 17 digs to go along with Caitlin Hansen’s 22 in the contest.
On Tuesday, Oct. 22, the Hoosiers headed to West Lafayette, Ind. for a mid-week conference match with Purdue. Despite falling 3-0 to the Boilermakers, the Hoosiers showed fight in each set, battling back from both eight and 10-point deficits to keep each game a closely contested battle.
HAVERLY PURSUING HISTORY
Jordan Haverly became the fifth Hoosier all-time to surpass 1,500 career kills with her first kill of the night at Wisconsin. Her 1,564 career kills are the seventh most among active players nationally and the third-most in IU program history. The fifth-year senior led Indiana in kills during all three of her previous seasons (2009, 2010 & 2012). She sat out the 2011 campaign due to a knee injury suffered during the Spring season of 2011. Haverly had major reconstructive surgery on her knee after tearing her ACL, MCL, LCL and meniscus.
This season, Haverly has 175 kills and is one of five Hoosiers with more than 100 terminations. The Cherry Hill, Ill., native ties for third on the IU squad in kills, no longer having to carry as much of the burden. Look for the senior to have a stronger 2013 season with less stress being placed on her surgically repaired knee.
Haverly has 973 career digs and is just 27 away from becoming the first Hoosier ever to accumulate 1,500 kills and 1,000 digs.
CAITLIN PASSES 1,000
Caitlin Hansen is in year two as the libero for the Hoosiers. The senior from Indianapolis surpassed the 1,000 dig barrier against Penn State. She proved it wasn’t a fluke, too, tallying 24 digs in the five-setter against Ohio State.
Hansen has started out Big Ten play strong, averaging 3.77 digs per set through 10 matches of conference play, a mark that ranks sixth in the Big Ten through four weeks of conference action.
PUT IT AWAY-LE
Transferring into Indiana last January, Indiana’s recruitment of Awele Nwaeze was fast and furious, sort of how her start on the court has been this Fall.
Nwaeze leads the team in blocks (63) and is second in kills (186) and points (235.0). The sophomore transferred in from Miami (FL) and has immediately become a go-to player for the Hoosiers in crunch time. On the first weekend of the season, Nwaeze earned MVP honors after leading the Hoosiers to the Indiana Invitational title and a 3-0 record.
MO’ BETTA
Junior Morgan Leach has been a consistent offensive force for the Hoosiers through her first two seasons in Bloomington, hitting .249 as a freshman and .259 as a sophomore. She is hitting .254 thus far in 2013.
Leach has 217 kills to lead the team in 2013 and is one of five Hoosiers with 100+ kills. Leach has thrived in a new role this season, moving to the right side full time since the beginning of the conference slate after rotating to the position while also playing some in the middle early in the season. Leach played solely in the middle during her first two years at IU.
In the past seven matches, Leach has hit double-digit kills in five contests, including her 20 kills on 37 swings (.378) which set a career single-match best in terminations. Her previous mark was 18 against Wisconsin on Sept. 28, 2013. On the season, the junior has reached atleast 10 kills in 11 matches, the most of any Hoosier this season.
BRINGING HOME THE HARDWARE
Head Coach Sherry Dunbar has led her Hoosiers to at least one non-conference tournament title in each of her seven seasons in Bloomington, and a total of 12 tourney crowns.

LEADING THE CHARGE
The captains of the 2013 IU Volleyball team, as elected by the players, are Caitlin Hansen and Jade Henderson. The program also has started a leadership council this season which includes Jordan Haverly, Melanie Hicks, Morgan Leach and Katie Gallagher.
Henderson and Hansen will be the team’s designated leaders on the court. Each of the four members of the Leadership Counsel will be the team’s go-to leader for designated areas. Hicks will be in charge of Gameday Preparation, Haverly will take the lead for Academics, Leach is in charge of Treatment and Recovery, and Gallagher will spearhead Community Outreach.
