BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - After strong performances at Lehigh University's Paul Short Run last weekend, Indiana cross country runners Samantha Ginther and JR Ricker were named Big Ten Cross Country Athletes of the Week. Ricker shared the honor with Purdue's Matthew McClintock. It marks the second time this season an IU women's runner has earned the honor and the first time this year for the men.
Ginther finished in second in the women's college gold race on Saturday in a field of 406 competitors. She clocked in at 20:10 on the 6K course. As a team, the Hoosier women finished sixth overall out of 48 schools, placing higher than two nationally ranked teams.
In this week's National Coaches' Poll, released on Tuesday, the Indiana women's team is just outside of the national rankings with the second highest amount of voting points among schools just beyond the top 30.
Ricker led the Indiana men to a team title at Lehigh, leading the IU pack with a 10th place individual finish. He completed the 8K run in a time of 24:12. All five Hoosier scorers were within 26 seconds of each other as IU finished with 89 team points to take first place out of 47 teams in the men's college gold race.
The Indiana men's cross country team also saw a change in today's coaches' poll, moving up three spots to a No. 12 ranking.
Next up for IUXC is a pair of meets on Saturday, Oct. 19. Indiana will send runners to both the Adidas Invitational in Madison, Wis., or the Pre-National meet in Terre Haute, Ind.
