Indiana vs. Penn State-Big Ten Tournament Semifinal Notes
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Indiana University men's soccer forward Tommy Thompson was named the 2013 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, and four Hoosiers were named to the All-Big Ten second team, the conference office announced Thursday night at the annual Big Ten Tournament banquet.
Despite missing the last six matches of the regular season due to injury, Thompson was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year and was a unanimous pick for the Big Ten All-Freshman team. In addition, he was a second-team All-Big Ten honoree. In 13 matches this season, Thompson is tied for the team lead and tied for fifth in the Big Ten in goals scored with five. He has also tallied two assists on the season, the most recent coming on the game-winning goal in Indiana's 2-1 overtime win over Michigan in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals.
Thompson is the 12th Hoosier to be named Big Ten Freshman of the Year, with the last coming in 2011 (Eriq Zavaleta). Current IU head coach Todd Yeagley was the first-ever Big Ten Freshman of the Year honoree, earning the award in 1991.
Joining Thompson on the second team is senior midfielder A.J. Corrado. Corrado leads the Hoosiers and is tied for second in the Big Ten in assists with seven. He added his third goal of the year in Indiana's 2-1 OT win over Michigan in the Big Ten Tournament, giving him 13 points on the season which is tied for the team lead. Corrado was a first-team selection in 2012 and is a two-time Capital One Academic All-District selection. He is also a finalist for the 2013 Senior CLASS Award.
Senior midfielder Nikita Kotlov was also named to the All-Big Ten second team. Kotlov was a first-team honoree in 2011 and a second-team pick in 2012. Kotlov is tied for the team lead and tied for fifth in the Big Ten in goals scored with five, with one game-winning goal on his resume this season. Two of Kotlov's goals this year have come in the last three matches, scoring in a 2-1 2OT loss to Michigan State on Nov. 1 and a 3-0 win at Northwestern on Nov. 8.
For the second year in a row, senior Jacob Bushue earns a spot on the All-Big Ten second team, this year for his defensive role. Bushue has started all 19 matches this season for the Hoosiers, moving to central defense for IU on a full-time basis in the match vs. Louisville on Oct. 15. Bushue has been a steady presence in the back all four years of his Indiana career and has been instrumental in the Hoosiers' recent turnaround, building on a two-match win streak. Bushue has also gotten into the act offensively with two goals and three assists this season.
In addition to the All-Big Ten awards, senior defender Matt McKain was named the Hoosiers' Sportsmanship Honoree.
