RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico - The Indiana women's golf team sits in 14th place after round one of the 54-hole Lady Puerto Rico Classic at Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
The Hoosiers posted a 26-over 314 among the 15-team field. Arkansas leads the field at 291, followed by Alabama and TCU (293), Texas Tech (296) and Iowa State (299).
"We actually did a lot of good things out there today," said head coach Clint Wallman. "We just made some of the errors that you see players make after a long competitive layoff."
Senior Kate Coons leads the Hoosiers and is tied for 16th after a 2-over 74. Sophomore Elizabeth Tong was two strokes behind with a 4-over 76, placing her tied for 39th.
Graduate student Kristen Schelling is next on the leaderboard for IU, tied for 62nd with a 7-over 79. Rounding out the five scorers, senior Rosie Davies is 13-over at 85 (T-79th). Freshman Marissa DeCola was disqualified from the round for a rules violation.
"We hit enough quality shots to score well," Wallman said. "We just made some compound errors and in a field of this quality those kinds of mistakes will cost you."
The teams are back on the course tomorrow for round two beginning at 9 a.m. ET.
