ON TAP THIS WEEKEND
The Hoosiers are set to play five games this weekend as part of the Georgia Tech Classic in Atlanta, Ga., Feb. 15-17. Indiana will open with Miami (Ohio) at 10:30 a.m. EST and Marshall at 12:30 p.m. on Friday. Saturday’s slate will feature Marshall at 10:30 a.m. and host Georgia Tech at 12:30 p.m. IU then closes out the weekend with a single game against Georgia Tech at 1 p.m. Live stats and radio coverage will be available on IUHoosiers.com.
LAST TIME OUT
Last weekend, the Hoosiers opened up their 40th season of softball at the Kajikawa Classic hosted by Arizona State, Feb. 8-9. Indiana went 2-3 with dominant wins over both Bradley (15-7 in five innings) and Portland State (7-0), and suffered losses at the hands of No. 4 Arizona State, No. 21 Stanford and No. 3 California.
Through the first five games of the season, the Hoosiers posted a batting average of .317 - good for third-best of any B1G squad. Also ranking in the top-five amonst Big Ten teams are slugging percentage (.447-third), runs scored (25-fourth), on-base percentage (.371-fifth), hits (39-T-fourth), RBI (24-fourth), triples (2-second), total bases (55-fourth), walks drawn (12-fifth) and sacrifice flies (6-first). Breanna Saucedo and Brianna Meyer posted averages of .500 (T-fourth amonst B1G hitters) in Tempe, going 9-for-18 and 6-for-12 at the plate, respectively. Saucedo strung together four consecutive multi-hit games, while Meyer hit safely in every contest and led the Hoosiers with seven RBI. Freshman Kassi Farmer shined in her debut, going 6-for-15 (.400) in her first collegiate weekend with five RBI, two doubles and a homerun for a healthy .733 slugging percentage.
In the circle, the Hoosiers’ staff picked up wins agaisnt Bradley and Portland State. Meaghan Murphy (1-1) tossed 5.0 innings in the win against Bradley, striking out five and allowed just three earned runs. Lora Olson (1-1) picked up her third career shutout in Indiana’s win over Portland State. The sophomore struck out two in seven flawless innings.
CLIMBING THE RANKS
A few members of the IU softball squad are moving up the ranks in several all-time career catagories. Breanna Saucedo currently ranks 10th (.330) for career batting average. Saucedo also needs 17 more runs to tie for ninth on the all-time runs scored list. Amanda Wagner is nearing several offensive catagories as well, as the senior needs to drive in just 13 RBI this season to tie for ninth all-time. Wagner is also 12 walks away from climing into fifth place in the IU career record books.
