THE OPENING TIP: The Hoosiers will begin the final two-game homestand of the year when it plays host to Iowa on Saturday night. Indiana defeated the Hawkeyes, 69-65, in the Big Ten opener on New Years Eve in Iowa City, and 103-89 in the last time the two teams met in Assembly Hall last season. IU will play host to Ohio State, Tuesday, March 5, on Senior Night.
WHAT IS AT STAKE: The Hoosiers enter the final eight days of the season with a one-game lead over Michigan State and Wisconsin and a two-game advantage over Michigan and Ohio State in the Big Ten standings.
INDIANA IS ... : Ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press poll for the fourth straight week and 10th week overall this season. In the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, the Hoosiers checked in at No. 1 for the second straight week. It is the 54th week all-time that the Hoosiers have held down the top spot in the AP poll after being in the top spot for the first six weeks of the season. This is the 29th straight week the Hoosiers have been nationally ranked, the most since IU appeared for 71 straight weeks from 1989-94. The Hoosiers are a nation's best 6-0 when facing a nationally ranked opponent. Overall, IU is 7-4 against teams that have been nationally ranked at some point this season.
COACHES: Tom Crean is in his fifth year with the Hoosiers and has guided them to a 51-13 mark since the start of the 2011-12 season and is 79-79 during his tenure at Indiana. He is 269-175 all-time as a head coach and has 12 wins over nationally ranked foes in the last two-plus seasons. Fran McCaffery is in his third season as the head coach at Iowa and has a record of 47-47 with the Hawkeyes.
1,000 POINT SCORERS: Indiana currently has four players with more than 1,000 career points in the starting lineup, which is the first time in school history that an IU team has had four players surpass 1,000 points at one time. Senior Christian Watford (1,650), senior Jordan Hulls (1,278), sophomore Cody Zeller (1,020) and junior Victor Oladipo (1,021) make up 4/5 of the highest scoring active starting lineup in college basketball. Zeller and Oladipo became the 45th and 46th players in IU history to join the club with their efforts against MSU.
BIG TEN WEEKLY AWARD: For the second time this season, Victor Oladipo garnered the Big Ten Player of the Week award on Monday. He scored 19 points, including six in the final 50 seconds to secure the Hoosiers 72-68 win at then-No. 4/5 Michigan State. He also surpassed 1,000 career points in the game and added five steals. Cody Zeller has also claimed the award twice this season.
TEAM NOTES: Indiana leads the nation in scoring margin (20.4) and free throws made (551. IU is second in points per game (82.2), 3-point field goal percentage (42.6), fifth in rebound margin (8.3), and 15th in field goal percentage defense (38.4). IU leads the Big Ten in home attendance (17,405) and will sell out all 20 home games this season.
NATIONALLY (PLAYERS): Junior Victor Oladipo is third in the country in field goal percentage (63.3) and junior Cody Zeller is 14th (57.5). Senior Jordan Hulls is third in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage (50.0) and senior Christian Watford is fourth (49.5). Oladipo is second in the country in effective field goal percentage (68.6).
NATIONAL BEST TWO HOOSIERS NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN: Sophomore Cody Zeller (Washington, Ind.) was named a First Team Academic All-American and senior Jordan Hulls (Bloomington, Ind.) was named a Third Team Academic All-American. A business major with a 3.44 G.P.A., Zeller is the lone sophomore on the Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Men's Basketball first team. Hulls is a graduate student with a 3.49 G.P.A. in athletic administration. He earned a bachelor's degree in exercise science from IU last May. IU is the only school with two players among the 15 honored.
CHEANEY RECOGNIZED: IU Director of Operations and Internal and External Development Calbert Cheaney will be recognized prior to the Iowa game to celebrate the 20th Anniversary (March 4, 1993) of the Evansville native becoming the all-time leading scorer in the Big Ten and at IU. He scored 2,613 career points.
