Update from day three prelims of the 2013 Big Ten men's swimming and diving championships at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington.
400 Individual Medley
Steve Schmuhl set the tone for the Hoosiers, setting a new school record with a time of 3:42.70 to qualify in the top spot for tonight's championship final. The previous record of 3:43.07 stood for about three minutes as Sam Trahin posted that time in the previous heat, finishing second overall. Nicholas Schwab earned a spot in the consolation final, placing 11th with a career-best time of 3:49.36. Michael Mohler will swim the bonus final at a career best 3:56.48 (24th). Grayson Smith placed 25th with his career time of 3:56.57, while Ryan Downey was 40th in 4:03.28.
100 Butterfly
Kyle Johnson was the lone representative for IU in the 100 butterfly, finishing 35th in a career-best time of 49.54.
200 Freestyle
Jim Barbiere clocked a personal best and the fourth-fastest time in school history with a 1:35.76, putting him seventh in qualifying and earning a spot in the championship final. Matt Gerth will swim the consolation final with his PR of 1:36.95 putting him 14th in the field. Ryan Hinshaw placed 34th (1:38.78), with Brent Aarons 47th in a career best of 1:39.98.
100 Breaststroke
Cody Miller is the top seed in tonight's championship final after setting a new Big Ten meet record and school record with a time of 51.96, becoming the first Hoosier to ever go under 52 seconds in the event. Joining him in the championship final is Tanner Kurz, who pulled out a career best 53.09 to qualify fourth. Mike Hurley leads the way in the consolation final, finishing ninth in prelims in a career-best 53.71. Ian Boggs will swim in the bonus final, finishing 21st with a career time of 54.71.
100 Backstroke
Defending champion James Wells is the top qualifier heading into tonight's championship final, posting a career-best and NCAA A cut of 45.52. Eric Ress, the 2011 champion in the event, will also swim tonight, placing fourth in prelims with a time of 46.48. Daniel Kanorr will compete in the consolation final, finishing 13th in the morning session with a career-best time of 47.50.
