LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The No. 60 Indiana women's tennis team knocked off No. 2 Duke on Friday afternoon in Las Vegas. The Hoosiers defeated the Blue Devils by a 4-2 margin for IU's first win over a top-10 opponent this season.
Duke (9-3) struck by winning the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead.
All of the singles matches came down to the wire as they were all decided in three sets. Duke had only five healthy players available to play, so Indiana (11-4, 0-1) picked up a point with the Blue Devils not having a full roster. IU's Leslie Hureu put the Hoosiers ahead as she rallied to take down No. 35 Ester Goldfeld after dropping the first set, 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 in the top singles match.
Carolyn Chupa would score Indiana's next team point in the No. 3 match. Chupa fell in the opening set against No. 88 Mary Clayton, but fought back to take the win, 5-7, 7-5, 6-3.
Duke's Marianne Jodoin, ranked 84th nationally in singles, topped Indiana's Sophie Garre, 6-3, 5-7. 6-0, at No. 5. That outcome made it a 3-2 IU advantage in the team tally.
Katie Klyczek went on to close it out for the Hoosiers in the No. 2 match. She followed her teammates' lead and did not let a defeat in her first set bother her as she went on to top No. 16 Hanna Mar of Duke, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
The No. 4 singles match between Indiana's Alecia Kauss and Duke's Annie Mulholland was not completed.
"We have been close to beating top 20 teams all year," head coach Lin Loring said. "We have kept telling the girls that we are good team and just keep believing. The highlight of the match has to be that after losing the first set in every singles match, we came back and won every second set. You could feel the momentum changing. This was a huge win for our program."
IU players defeated three nationally-ranked opponents in singles play en route to the win.
The Hoosiers will return home to take on Penn State on Friday, March 22, in Bloomington.
