BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Sophomore Katie Klyczek earned Big Ten women's tennis Athlete of the Week recognition from the conference office on Wednesday afternoon. Klyczek won the clinching singles match in Indiana's win over then-No. 2 Duke on March 15 in Las Vegas.
Klyczek, playing in the No. 2 position in singles, was matched up against Hanna Mar of the Blue Devils who was ranked 16th nationally in singles. Mar took the first set, 3-6, to begin the match before Klyczek rebounded to win the second set, 6-4. The Munster, Ind., native kept the momentum going into the third set and went on to win in the deciding frame, 6-3.
The win propelled the Hoosiers from being ranked 60th last week in the ITA team rankings to 38th in the current rankings. The Hoosiers have an 11-4 record on the season as Big Ten play will resume this weekend.
This is Indiana's second weekly conference honor this season ats Alecia Kauss was named Athlete of the Week on Jan. 15. This is Klyczek's first career weekly Big Ten laurel.
IU will welcome a pair of Big Ten foes to Bloomington this weekend. The Hoosiers will take on No. 37 Penn State on Friday, March 22, beginning at 5 p.m. ET and then will welcome No. 53 Ohio State on Sunday, March 24, at 11 a.m. ET.
