THE OPENING TIP: The Indiana men's basketball team enters the final game of the regular season having clinched a share of its 21st Big Ten Championship and has earned the No. 1 seed in next week's Big Ten Tournament in Chicago. This will be the first time in the 16-year event that the Hoosiers will enter as the top seed. IU has a league best 6-2 record on the road in the Big Ten and defeated the Wolverines 81-73 in Bloomington on February 2.
WHAT IS AT STAKE: While the Hoosiers already share a portion of the Big Ten title, a win over Michigan would give them their first outright title since 1993. IU has shared titles in 1926, `28, `36, `57, `67, `74, `87, `91 and 2002. The Hoosiers have won outright crowns in 1953, `54, `58, `73, `75, `76, `80, `81, `83, `89 and `93.
INDIANA IS ... : Ranked No. 2 in both the Associated Press poll and USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll this week after spending the previous four weeks at No. 1. The Hoosiers have held the No. 1 spot for 10 weeks this season and 54 weeks all-time. This is the 30th straight week the Hoosiers have been nationally ranked, the most since IU appeared for 71 straight weeks from 1989-94. The Hoosiers are a nation's best 6-1 when facing a nationally ranked opponent this year.
COACHES: Tom Crean is in his fifth year with the Hoosiers and has guided them to a 51-13 mark since the start of the 2011-12 season and is 80-80 during his tenure at Indiana. He is 270-176 all-time as a head coach and has 12 wins over nationally ranked foes in the last two-plus seasons. John Beilein is in his sixth season as the head coach at Michigan and has a record of 116-82 with the Wolverines.
1,000 POINT SCORERS: Indiana currently has four players with more than 1,000 career points in the starting lineup, which is the first time in school history that an IU team has had four players with 1,000 points at one time. Senior Christian Watford (1,667), senior Jordan Hulls (1,288), sophomore Cody Zeller (1,059) and junior Victor Oladipo (1,038) make up 4/5 of the highest scoring active starting lineup in college basketball. Zeller and Oladipo became the 45th and 46th players in IU history to join the club with their efforts against MSU on Feb. 19.
BIG TEN WEEKLY AWARD: Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell was named Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week for the second time this season last week. He averaged 14.5 points and 5.0 in two games last week to help the Hoosiers clinch at least a tie for the Big Ten Championship. Victor Oladipo garnered the Big Ten Player of the Week award the previous week after scoring 19 points, including six in the final 50 seconds to secure the Hoosiers 72-68 win at then-No. 4/5 Michigan State. He also surpassed 1,000 career points in the game and added five steals. Cody Zeller has also claimed the award twice this season.
TEAM NOTES: Indiana leads the nation in free throws made per game (19.7). The Hoosiers are second in scoring margin (19.1), third in scoring (81.1), fourth in 3-point field goal percentage (41.8), 10th in rebound margin (7.5) and 17th in field goal percentage defense (38.7). IU leads the Big Ten in home attendance (17,412) and sold out all 19 home games this season.
NATIONALLY (PLAYERS): Junior Victor Oladipo is fourth in the country in field goal percentage (63.1), senior Jordan Hulls is second in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage (48.3) and senior Christian Watford is fourth (48.5). Oladipo is second in the country in effective field goal percentage (68.4).
NATIONAL BEST TWO HOOSIERS NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN: Sophomore Cody Zeller (Washington, Ind.) was named a First Team Academic All-American and senior Jordan Hulls (Bloomington, Ind.) was named a Third Team Academic All-American. A business major with a 3.44 G.P.A., Zeller is the lone sophomore on the Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Men's Basketball first team. Hulls is a graduate student with a 3.49 G.P.A. in athletic administration. He earned a bachelor's degree in exercise science from IU last May. IU is the only school with two players among the 15 honored.
