The Indiana softball team will kick off its nine-game home stand at Andy Mohr Field tomorrow, April 2, when the Hoosiers host Indiana State for a 6:05 p.m. EST single game in Bloomington.
SCOUTING THE SYCAMORES
The Indiana State softball program sits at 11-20 on the season and holds a 2-7 mark in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Sycamores will come off a three-game series with Bradley where ISU was swept for the first time this season. Megan Stone leads Indiana's State with her .378 batting average, while Ashli Scott owns the best ERA on staff with a 3.55 mark.
ALL-TIME SERIES
The Hoosiers and Sycamores will meet for the 73rd time in program history. IU leads the all-time series, 55-17, and have taken the past nine straight contests. Both squads last met for an April 11 single game in Terre Haute during the 2012 campaign, where Indiana shutout ISU with 3-0 win. Then-freshman Lora Olson tossed her second career shutout in that game and fanned a then-season high seven batters and allowed just two hits.
LAST TIME OUT
The Hoosiers will come off of a tough trip to East Lansing, Mich., where Indiana was swept by Michigan State after losing all three contests at Secchia Stadium. The Hoosiers now sit at 1-5 in conference play. It is the first time the Hoosiers have been swept in a conference series since the 2010 season, when Indiana loss consecutive games at Wisconsin, May 5-6.
In Friday's contest, IU fell 5-0 to the Spartans. The Hoosiers' offense was good for four hits in the contest, with Shelby Gogreve leading IU with a pair of singles for a 2-for-3 outing. Meaghan Murphy and Lexi Reese also tallied hits for Indiana. Murphy got the start and was dealt the loss, falling to 9-10 on the year. The lefty allowed five runs, two of which were earned, in 6.0 innings pitched. She scattered nine hits and struck out seven while walking just one MSU batter.
Despite tallying a run in all by two innings in game two, Indiana lost its second straight contest on Saturday, 10-7. The Hoosiers managed to plate seven runs on 11 hits, but the Indiana pitching staff gave up a combined 15 hits to help the Spartans to 10 runs. Lora Olson was given the start, but was replaced by Brooke Boejer after giving up four runs in 1.1 innings. Boetjer would take the loss on 3.0 innings of work, allowing five runs on six hits, before Murphy closed out the remaining 1.2 innings of the contest. Shannon Cawley had a 3-for-5 day at the plate and scored once while driving in a pair to lead the Hoosiers' offense. Amanda Wagner provided a pair of hits and two RBI, while Gogreve and Kassi Farmer each went 2-for-4 on the day.
In Sunday's 2-1, eight innings loss, Indiana registered just two hits, singles from Brianna Meyer and Murphy and scored one run on an MSU error in the fourth. Despite the loss, Murphy (9-11) pitched a solid 7.1 innings in the circle. She allowed just one earned run on six hits while striking out seven MSU batters.
NOT IN OUR HOUSE
The Hoosiers have done a tremendous job of defending their home field since the 2011 season. Indiana has combined for a remarkable 42-6 record in Bloomington, Ind. during that time, including a perfect 3-0 start at the new Andy Mohr Field this season. Those three wins extend the Hoosier's home win streak to six games, as IU swept Nebraska in Indiana's final home series of the 2012 season.
