Hoosiers Continue Homestand With Three-Game Series Against Purdue

A LOOK AT THE BOILERMAKERS
The Purdue Boilermakers are currently 16-22 on the year with a 3-6 mark in Big Ten play. Purdue is coming off of a 7-4 win at Loyola Chicago this past Tuesday. In their previous Big Ten series, the Boilermakers went 1-2 with Michigan State, dropping game one 3-2 before defeating the Spartans 7-2 on Satuday, April 6. Michigan State took the rubbermatch on Sunday by a score of 1-0.
As a team, Purdue is hitting .269 on the year with Andie Varsho leading the team with a .438 average. The Boilermakers' pitching staff has held a 3.04 ERA through 40 games this season. Lilly Fecho has tossed a team-high 111.2 innings with a 2.76 ERA and a 6-12 record in 2013.
ALL-TIME SERIES
The Hoosiers and Boilermakers will meet for the 59th time in the all-time series that dates back to the 1974 season. Purdue leads the series 30-28 and won in the two squads' previous meeting in 2012, defeating Indiana 11-2 on April 15, but the Hoosiers have taken four of the last five games.
LAST TIME OUT
The Hoosiers recently played in a three-game home series with Penn State on April 5-7, where Hoosiers won their first conference series of the 2013 campaign on a 2-1 weekend. Indiana used a two-run, sixth inning to come from behind and take game one, 4-3. On Satuday, IU failed to plate a run in a 3-0 loss but would come back with a 4-3 victory on Sunday.
Shannon Cawley led Indiana's offense with four hits on the weekend (4-for-10, .400) and drove in a pair of runs. Freshman Michelle Huber went a perfect 2-for-2 in a pair of pinch hit appearances and knocked in the game winning run on a two-run single in Sunday's 4-3 win.
In the circle, Meaghan Murphy took on a majority of the innings for Indiana, posting a 3.50 ERA in 10.0 innings of work for a 2-0 record. She held opposing batters to a .167 batting average and struck out seven on the weekend. Despite taking the loss for Indiana, Lora Olson pitched well in her 5.2 innings on Saturday. The sophomore struck out three and allowed just one earned run (1.24 ERA) while giving up seven hits. Brooke Boetjer stepped in and provided 5.1 innings of relief in three appearances, collecting a pair of saves and striking out three while giving up just one run.
NOT IN OUR HOUSE
The Hoosiers have done a tremendous job of defending their home field since the beginning of the 2011 season. Indiana has combined for a remarkable 35-7 record in Bloomington, Ind. during that time, including a perfect 5-0 start at the new Andy Mohr Field this season.
CAWLEY HITS HER STRIDE
After hitting just .232 (13-56) through the first 20 games of the season, sophomore Shannon Cawley has turned things around at the plate. Since that time, Cawley has hit .377 (23-for-61) to improve her overall batting average from a .232 to a .304 on the season. Through the latter half of those games, the sophomore has only struck out five times and driven in 18 of her 24 RBI so far this year. In the past 19 contests, Cawley has also recorded a hit in all but five games.
WALK IT OUT
Sophomore Brianna Meyer has shown great vision at the plate for the Hoosiers, drawing a team-best 30 walks this season. That breaks down to 0.77 walks per game, tying the 24th best mark in the country. In 39 games played, Meyer has drawn a walk in 21 different contests including a season single-game best three walks against Geogia Tech on Feb. 17.
FIRST TO STRIKE
When the Indiana softball team scores first, the Hoosiers are 16-5 on the season and 9-2 in games where Indiana plates runs in the opening frame. Overall, IU has outscored opponents 39-12 in the first inning alone.
UNDER THE LIGHTS
The Indiana softball team has experienced great success when playing under the lights this season. The Hoosiers are currently 4-1 in evening contests and have won the past four consecutive night games of year--each played at Andy Mohr Field.
