A LOOK AT THE WOLVERINES
The Michigan softball program will enter tomorrow’s game with a 35-7 mark on the season and a perfect 12-0 mark in Big Ten play. The Wolverines recently played a road series at Michigan State where U-M swept the Spartans after taking all three contests on the weekend. The Wolverines are currently riding a 17-game win-streak.
The Wolverines are hitting a conference-best team batting average of .351 and are led by Caitlin Blanchards’ .415 clip on the year. U-M pitchers have combined for a 2.02 ERA through 42 games in 2013, with Sara Driesenga owning a staff-best 1.69 earned run average in 157.1 innings pitched.
ALL-TIME SERIES
Indiana holds an all-time record of 71-28 with Michigan, but has won two of the last four meetings. In the previous matchup between the two squads, Indiana fell 7-2 to the then No.-20 Wolverines in the final game of their weekend series in Bloomington.
LAST TIME OUT
Indiana hosted Purdue at Andy Mohr Field for a three-game series, April 12-15. The Hoosiers dropped all three contests and suffered a series sweep at the hands of the Boilermakers for the first time since the 2009 season.
IU outhit Purdue in Friday’s 7-2 loss, but it would be two homeruns, one of which a grand slam, from Purdue’s Erika Petruzzi that made the difference in the ballgame. She would end up driving in five RBI to lead Purdue.
All but one Indiana batter posted hits against Purdue’s pitching staff, with Brooke Boetjer connecting on a pair for a 2-for-3 day - the first multiple-hit performance of her career. Kassi Farmer drove in one of Indiana’s two runs, while Kelsey Dotson brought in a run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning.
Meaghan Murphy (12-12) started the day for Indiana and lasted 2.1 innings, where she allowed five earned runs on six hits while striking out three. Boetjer closed out the remaining 4.2 innings in the circle and held Purdue to two hits and allowed one earned run.
After falling behind eight runs through the first six innings of Saturday’s game, the Hoosiers could not scrape together enough offense to overcome its deficit as the Hoosiers dropped its second-straight game to Purdue, 9-1.
Amanda Wagner paced the Hoosiers’ offense with her 2-for-3 day at the plate, while Shannon Cawley drove in Indiana’s lone run of the ballgame.
Lora Olson was issued the loss to fall to 6-8 on the year. She threw five complete innings, striking out a pair of batters and allowed five earned runs on eight hits. Brooke Boetjer provided 2.0 innings of relief, giving up four runs on four hits while striking out one.
In the series finale, the Hoosiers took its first lead of the weekend with a three-run third, but Purdue would eventually pull away with a 7-3 win to secure the series sweep.
Wagner again led Indiana at the plate with her 16th multiple-hit game of the year and extender her hit-streak to six contests with a 2-for-3 performance.
Olson got the start and was touched for five runs on six hits through 4.0 innings of play. She struck out three and walked one on the day. Boetjer closed out the final 3.0 innings and allowed one earned run on three hits while retiring three batters on strikes.
FIRST TO STRIKE
When the Indiana softball team scores first, the Hoosiers are 16-5 on the season and 9-2 in games where Indiana plates runs in the opening frame. Overall, IU has outscored opponents 39-13 in the first inning alone.
CAWLEY HITS HER STRIDE
After hitting just .232 (13-56) through the first 20 games of the season, sophomore Shannon Cawley has turned things around at the plate. Since that time, Cawley has hit .361 (26-for-72) to improve her overall batting average from a .232 to a .305 on the season. Through the latter half of those games, the sophomore has only struck out five times and driven in 19 of her 25 RBI so far this year. In the past 22 contests, Cawley has also recorded a hit in all but five games and is currently riding a seven game hit-streak.
