FRENCH LICK, Ind. - The Indiana women's golf team matched their second-round score with a 303 on Sunday to finish fifth at the 2013 Big Ten Women's Golf Championships held on the Donald Ross Course at French Lick Resort.
The Hoosiers finished with a 916 (310-303-303) over 54 holes of play. Northwestern and Purdue tied for the team title at 884, with Michigan State third (889) and Penn State fourth (900).
Senior Kate Coons posted the lowest round of the tournament for IU on Sunday with a 1-over 73 to place tied for 20th (80-75-73/228). Coons carded just two bogeys on the day and offset that with a birdie on the par-4 eighth hole. It marks the best-ever finish for Coons at the Big Ten Championships.
Freshman Marissa DeCola showed she is a force to be reckoned with after placing tied for 26th with a 4-over 76 on Sunday (80-74-76/230). DeCola had two birdies in the round with a four on the par-5 fifth hole and a four on the par-5 seventh hole. To that she added nine holes of par and had no double bogeys on the day.
Sophomore Elizabeth Tong was 5-over for Sunday's round and finished tied for 32nd (78-77-77/232). Tong opened the day with a birdie on one and went on to tally her highest birdie tally of the tournament with three. She posted a four on the fifth hole and a two on the par-3 16th hole. Her only double bogey of the day came on the par-3 sixth hole. It was also a career-best Big Ten Championships finish for Tong.
Senior Rosie Davies capped her Big Ten career with a tie for 38th at 234 (76-77-81). Davies had a pair of double bogeys on three and 10 but would card 11 holes of par on the day.
In her lone Big Ten Championships appearance, graduate student Kristen Schelling tied for 41st, with a 77 on Sunday giving her a 236 for the event (76-83-77). Schelling had 13 holes of par or better, including a birdie on the par-4 17th hole.
Senior Pamela Burneski competed in her fourth Big Ten Championships, finishing 70th with a score of 258 (87-85-86). Burneski hit par on five of nine holes after making the turn, but a score of nine on the par-4 10th hole would send her over-par score into double digits.
The Hoosiers will now wait to see if they have been selected for postseason play. Teams invited to the NCAA East, Central and West regionals will be announced at approximately 9 p.m. ET on NCAA.com. Highlights of the 2013 Big Ten Women's Golf Championships will air Wednesday, May 8 at 6 p.m. ET on the Big Ten Network.
