The Florida Relays provides Indiana Track and Field with yet another opportunity to face some of the nation's best competition on a big stage. The meet will be streamed live by Flotrack, with a subscription required. Runners will compete in individual events on Friday and Saturday's action on the track consists of relays only. The Hoosiers will get a good preview of competition they'll see later this season at the NCAA East Preliminary Round.
Friday will provide Indiana's first look at senior Chris Vaughn in the open 400 meters. The senior redshirted indoors and is completing his eligibility this outdoor season after closing his season with a time of 45.48 to take second at Big Tens and qualify for the U.S. Olympic Trials. The Hoosiers will also be able to run many of the relays for the first time this season after the Alabama Relays was shortened due to rain. Derek Drouin will compete in three events, the 110m hurdles, the javelin and the high jump, and senior Jordan Gray will run the 800m for the first time this season, after running 2:06.89 late last season and then redshirting indoors.
LAST TIME OUT
Indiana track and field won three events at the Texas Relays, as Derek Drouin won the men's high jump to join Kyla Buckley and Sarah Maxson, who won titles on Friday. Drouin took the outdoor world lead in the high jump, beating a who's who of collegiate high jumpers. At Stanford, the men's fast heat of the 5,000m had an Indiana feel up front.
Drouin cleared 2.30m (7-6.5) to better his closest competitor by 1.25 inches. The jump is the world's best outdoors this season. Drouin took three jumps at 2.33m (7-7.75), which is the Texas Relays record. Drouin is now within a centimeter of his lifetime outdoor best, which is IU's outdoor record.
Buckley launched a bomb that traveled 17.28m (56-8.5) for the win in the women's shot put. Buckley wins a Texas Relays watch, and her throw moves her to 11th on the world outdoor list, third on the division I list and first in the Big Ten. Her throw ranks third in IU history. Buckley finished two feet and 7.5 inches better than the second-place thrower.
Maxson jumped 1.75m (5-8.75) for the win in the B section of the women's high jump, taking a watch of her own. The clearance is her first outdoors as a collegiate and is a 1.5 inch improvement on her lifetime best. She now ranks sixth all-time in the IU outdoor record books.
In the fast heat of the men's 5,000m at Stanford, Andy Bayer clocked a time of 13:34.84 for third place. Zach Mayhew ran 13:41.95 for eighth. Mayhew's time ranks fifth in IU history. Bayer was just 1.7 seconds off his lifetime best in the event. IU alum Andrew Poore was second in 13:33.03.
