BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - A school-record nine Hoosiers were named All-Big Ten on Tuesday (May 21), including the Big Ten Pitcher of the Year, Aaron Slegers. In addition, Head Coach Tracy Smith was the unanimous choice for the league's Coach of the Year honor. Indiana also placed three student-athletes on the Big Ten's All-Freshman squad.
Slegers became the second Hoosier in IU history to earn distinction as the Big Ten's best pitcher, joining Eric Arnett's 2009 award-winning campaign. Coach Smith picks up Indiana's third Coach of the Year laurel after Bob Morgan did so in 1991 and 1993.A quartet of Hoosiers were tabbed All-Big Ten First Team members, also a school record. The previous mark was three First Team honorees (1974, 1992, 1996, 2008, 2009). Slegers and catcher Kyle Schwarber were selected unanimously while third baseman Dustin DeMuth and designated hitter Scott Donley stood beside them on the conference's First Team.
All-Big Ten Second Team members include first baseman Sam Travis, starting pitcher Joey DeNato and relief pitcher Scott Effross. Shortstop Michael Basil and relief pitcher Ryan Halstead are all-conference players as well, both receiving All-Big Ten Third Team recognition.
Effross was one of three Hoosiers slotted on the Big Ten All-Freshman team. Second baseman Nick Ramos and starting pitcher Will Coursen-Carr were chosen as well.
Basil wrapped up Indiana's haul of Big Ten decorations, bringing home the Sportsmanship Award.
