With a pair of home games this weekend, the Indiana Women's Soccer team has a couple exciting promotions for fans to get involved in.
First on Friday, after asking for fans to submit suggestions for a name for the student section over the summer, a winner has been selected. The winning name for the student section will be revealed at halftime and the winner will receive an iPad mini.
Then on Sunday, it is the annual "Bark in the Park" game where fans are encouraged to bring their dogs with them to the game to enjoy a beautiful day at Bill Armstrong Stadium watching soccer.
#LOVEMESOMEDEFENSE
The Indiana defense has been, statistically, one of the best in the Big Ten through the first two weekends. The Hoosiers have allowed just one goal over the first four games, a total matched only by Iowa. Opponents have only managed to get off 7.5 shots per game against the IU defense.
The defense is anchored in goal by Shannon Flower with defenders Lara Ross, Rebecca Dreher, Tori Keller and Becca Zambon providing the line of defense in front of the goal.
"X" MARKS THE SPOT
A couple of current Hoosiers find themselves inside the Top 10 list for different career stats as we enter play this weekend:
• Goals: 9th - Lisa Nouanesengsy (15)
• Multi-Goal Games: T8th - Lisa Nouanesengsy (2)
• GAA: 19th - Shannon Flower (1.72)
• Shutouts: 9th - Shannon Flower (5)
• Victories (GK): 8th - Shannon Flower (12)
• Assists: T8th - Rebecca Candler (12)
LISA LIGHTS THE LAMP
Senior midfielder Lisa Nouanesengsy showed her senior leadership on the road once again, putting home the game-winning goal at UW Milwaukee. She also picked up an assist in the game a week after she provided the game-winning goal in the season opener at Ohio.
For her career, the Huber Heights, Ohio, native now has five game-winning goals.
DIVERSIFY THE PORTFOLIO
In the 5-0 win against Georgia Southern, Indiana had five different players record goals. The last time that happened was a 5-0 win at Xavier on Sept. 7, 2012.
For the season, a total of eight different players have scored at least one goal for the Hoosiers and 12 have recorded at least one point.
3 FOR ME
Through the first four games, the Hoosiers have had four different players record at least three points in one game.
• 4pt - Monica Melink (1G, 2A vs. Ga. Southern)
• 3pt - Lisa Nouanesengsy (1G, 1A vs. UWM)
• 3pt - Kayleigh Steigerwalt (1G, 1A vs. UWM)
• 3pt - Abby Smith (1G, 1A vs. Ga. Southern)
FLOWER POWER
Senior goalkeeper Shannon Flower has had a great start to her final collegiate campaign in the Cream and Crimson. Through the first four games, she has posted three shutouts - the first time that has happened at IU since 2009. Entering this year, Flower had two solo shutouts in 34 games played.
STEIGERWALT NO LONGER STYMIED
Sophomore Kayleigh Steigerwalt scored a goal and had an assist at Milwaukee last week, recording the first points of her career after playing as a defender last season for the Hoosiers.
BERBARY'S BUNCH
Indiana head coach Amy Berbary is in her first season as a collegiate head coach, as she takes over for former IU head coach Mick Lyon, who retired following the 2012 season.
The Alpharetta, Ga., native spent the last five years at Auburn and was the Associate Head Coach for the 2012 season. She helped lead the Tigers to a pair of NCAA Tournament berths as well as a SEC Tournament title in 2011. She was also named the 2012 South Atlantic Regional Assistant Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
Before Auburn, she spent time at the University of Dayton as an assistant coach. There, she was responsible for numerous highly ranked recruiting classes with the Flyers and was joined on staff as an assistant coach by Sergio Gonzalez, who is now an assistant under her at Indiana.
Also joining the staff as an assistant coach with the Hoosiers in Benji Walton, who worked with Berbary for a brief time at the University of Georgia while Berbary was finishing her playing career.
And what a career it was for the Bulldogs, as she left the school having scored the third-most goals in program history and ranking third in career points. She helped lead the Bulldogs to a Sweet 16 appearance in 1998 and the Second Round in 2001.
SERIES HISTORY
This weekend will be the first-ever meeting against both teams - Eastern Michigan and Eastern Kentucky - for the Indiana women's soccer team.
BIG TEN'S BEST
Senior goalkeeper Shannon Flower earned her first Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honor on Aug. 26, after posting a pair of shutouts - the third and fourth of her career - during the opening weekend of play. She made three terrific saves in the 1-0 win at Ohio and then guided the defensive effort against Georgia Southern on Sunday that held the Eagles to just two shots in the contest.
HELLO, MY NAME IS...M
While the Hoosiers return eight starters from last year's team, that still left room for new faces in the starting lineup this year. Two of those new faces - Jordan Woolums and Tori Keller - were in the starting lineup for both games on the opening weekend, making their first career starts.
There are also a trio of freshmen that have made their Cream and Crimson debuts in Veronica Ellis, Marissa Borschke and Lauren Joray. Both Ellis and Joray are true freshmen while Borschke played 5 games last year at NJIT - under current IU assistant coach Sergio Gonzalez - before a broken foot ended her season.
COME ON EILEEN
The 2012 season saw the Hoosiers set a new record off the field thanks to the hard work of Academic Advisor Eileen O'Rourke. Every student-athlete on the team that was eligible for the award - 20 players - received Academic All-Big Ten honors following the season. Freshmen and first year players are not eligible for the award and student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 cumulative GPA.
CALL IT A COMEBACK
Indiana welcomes back 23 letterwinners from the 2012 season, including eight starters. With a overall roster of 30 players, IU has just five newcomers to the squad and 11 players that are entering their fourth year in the program.
The more notable returning players include Lisa Nouanesengsy, Rebecca Candler, Lara Ross and Abby Smith.
Nouanesengsy, a senior, tied for the team lead last year with seven goals and added three assists for a total of 17 points, which was good for third on the team. She is also the only player in IUWS history to record three goals in a game, twice.
Candler, a senior as well, set a new IU single-season record with 10 assist during the 2012 season. To go with her four goals, she tied for the team lead with 18 points.
Another senior, Lara Ross, was a defensive stalwart last year. She played in all 19 games and helped then-freshman goalkeeper Sarah Stone earn a pair of Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors with her communication in the defensive backfield.
Abby Smith, a junior, scored just four goals for the Hoosiers in 2012, but she made all of them count and each one went for a game-winner. Her nine points were good for fourth on the team.
