BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's tennis team had a great start to the spring schedule in day one of the IU Winter Invitational on Saturday going a perfect 5-0 in doubles play and 7-3 in singles action.
In singles, No. 73 Katie Klyczek of IU defeated Micah Hermsdorf of Abilene Christian, 4-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-1). Indiana's Alecia Kauss took down Oregon's Jasmine Minor after dropping the first set, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7).
Carolyn Chupa was also triumphant for the Hoosiers with her 6-3, 6-1 win over Marquette's Ali Dawson. No. 86 Sophie Garre won in straight sets as well over Harvard's Amy He, 6-4, 6-2. Paula Gutierrez picked up a singles win over Erin Gebes of Marquette, 6-2, 6-3.
In doubles, IU's five tandems had a perfect afternoon. In the main draw of 16 pairs, Garre and Fujimoto won 6-4 over Oregon's Sofia Hager and Allie Hueffner. Kauss teamed with Shannon Murdy to down Marquette's Dawson and Laia Hernandez, 6-1. Gabrielle Rubenstein and freshman Kim Schmider took care of Harvard's Spencer Liang and June Lee, 6-4. Chupa and Klyczek also won in the main draw over ACU's Nada Marjanovic and Emily Conrad, 6-1.
In the doubles round robin, IU's Gutierrez and Mary Beth King cruised to a win over Sylvia Li and Danielle Mirda, 6-0.
"When you consider we have been off for five weeks, I thought we played well but competed even better," head coach Lin Loring said. "The only singles matches we lost were in third set match tie-breakers, so that tells you we competed on every court. Also, it is very impressive that we got all four of our doubles teams thru to the final eight. Today was a good day for Indiana tennis."
Day two of the invite will get started on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. ET at the IU Tennis Center.
