IU Cleans Up Big Ten Swimming and Diving Awards

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana men's swimming and diving team swept the Big Ten weekly awards, while the women took two out of three, the conference office announced Tuesday.
After a 149-91 win over Auburn to open the 2014-15 season, sophomore Anze Tavcar was named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week, while freshman James Connor was Diver of the Week and freshman Ali Khalafalla the Freshman of the Week.
On the women's side, Brooklynn Snodgrass picked up her sixth Swimmer of the Week award, while Kennedy Goss was named Freshman of the Week.
Tavcar started his sophomore season with a sweep of the sprint freestyle events, taking the 50 free in 20.16 and the 100 free in 44.09. Both are NCAA provisional qualifying marks. He also helped Indiana to a victory in the 400 free relay as IU clocked a time of 2:58.36.
Connor opened his collegiate career with a sweep of the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events vs. the Tigers. Connor tallied 377.33 points on the 1-meter and 415.58 on the 3-meter. Both are NCAA Zone qualifying scores.
For Khalafalla his IU career started with a bang as he opened the meet vs. Auburn by taking the 200 medley relay with a dramatic freestyle anchor leg. IU posted a time of 1:28.78 in the 200 medley relay. He also helped the Hoosiers to a meet-ending victory in the 400 freestyle relay, clocking a time of 2:58.36.
On the women's side, Snodgrass came within nearly a second of the NCAA automatic qualifying time in the 200 backstroke, winning in a time of 1:53.97. That was five seconds faster than the second-place finisher. She also took second in the 200 free (1:49.55) and the 400 free relay (3:22.64).
Goss opened her collegiate career with a win in the 200 freestyle, posting a time of 1:48.75. She followed that up with a second-place showing in the 500 freestyle.
Next up Indiana will send swimmers to the Indiana Intercollegiate, Oct. 18 at Purdue starting at noon.
