IU vs. Maryland Sunday in Inaugural B1G Meeting

SETTING THE SCENE • Indiana brings a three-match win streak and a 5-0-1 record in its last six matches to its first Big Ten meeting with Maryland.
• The Hoosiers are coming off a 2-1 win at Ohio State on Oct. 12 with goals from Femi Hollinger-Janzen and Jay McIntosh. • IU goalkeeper Colin Webb stopped a penalty kick in the final minute of play to preserve the win.
• IU is currently third in the Big Ten standings with a record of 2-1-1. Maryland is fifth at 2-2-1. • The IU offense seems to be clicking with 15 goals in its last six games.
• Indiana moved up to No. 1 in this week's NCAA RPI. Thirteen of Indiana's 18 regular-season games are against teams currently in the RPI top 50. • Maryland brings a three-match win streak in to Bloomington, most recently posting a 2-0 victory over Lehigh.
NEWS AND NOTES
• Goals from Femi Hollinger-Janzen and Jay McIntosh, as well as a last-minute save from goalkeeper Colin Webb gave IU a 2-1 win at Ohio State on October 12. • The win was the Hoosiers' 39th in the series, putting them 39-4-3 all-time against the Buckeyes.
• A scoreless first half changed three minutes into the second period when Hollinger-Janzen tallied his third goal of the year for the 1-0 lead. • Andrew Oliver picked up his first assist of the season, sending in a near cross that Hollinger-Janzen slotted home from six yards out.
• The Hoosiers held the one-goal lead until a hand ball called in the penalty area in the 77th minute gave OSU a PK, taken by Kyle Culbertson to tie things at 1-all. • The tie didn't even last a full minute as McIntosh netted his first career goal, scoring the game winner off a long pass from Jamie Vollmer that he knicked in off the right post.
• That is Vollmer's team-leading fourth assist of the season. • It looked as if OSU would tie the match with 1:07 to play as the Hoosiers were again called for a hand ball in the box.
• Culbertson again stepped up to take the kick, but this time his shot to the near post was tipped away by a diving Webb. • That is Webb's second PK stop this season as he also saved a freebie in IU's 1-0 win over Dartmouth.
• Indiana is out-scoring its opponents 8-2 in the last three matches and 13-5 over the last five matches. • A total of 3,755 fans were on hand in Louisville for the win, a good number of them wearing the Cream and Crimson.
• A tally of 1,736 fans were at the IU-SLU match on October 1 as the Hoosiers are averaging 2,590 fans per game at home.
SCOUTING THE TERRAPINS • Maryland is 6-5-2 on the season but enters Sunday's match with a three-game win streak, topping VCU, Penn State and Lehigh by a combined 7-0 score.
• Junior midfielder Mael Corboz leads the way in scoring with five goals and three assists for 13 points. Senior midfielder Mikias Eitcha is next on the list with three goals and an assist. • The Terrapins are out-scoring opponents 17-11, with 166 shots to 96 for opponents. • Sophomore goalkeeper Zach Steffen has played all 1211:03 minutes in goal, allowing 11 scores with 22 saves for a 0.82 GAA with six shutouts.
• Head coach Sasho Cirovski is in his 22nd season at Maryland. He is assisted by Scott Buete and Brian Rowland.
SERIES HISTORY • Indiana leads the all-time series with Maryland, 3-0-2.
• The teams have not met since 2007, a 1-1 double overtime tie at the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic in Bloomington. • In fact, the last two meetings have been ties, with a 3-3 deadlock in College Park in 2005.
• IU's last win came in the semifinal of the 2004 NCAA College Cup, a 3-2 double OT win.

ON TARGET • After a slow start the IU offense has hit midseason form. • 15 of the Hoosiers' 19 goals this year have come in the last six games vs. Rutgers (2), UCF (4), Northwestern (1), Saint Louis (3), Louisville (3) and Ohio State.
• Indiana has tallied 85 shots in the six games, with 45 on frame (52.9 percent; 9/17 vs. Rutgers; 6/12 vs. UCF; 9/19 vs. Northwestern; 6/11 vs. Saint Louis; 7/13 vs. Louisville; 8/13 at Ohio State). • Prior to the four matches, just 23 of 88 attempts (26.1 percent) had been on frame.
• Tanner Thompson, Femi Hollinger-Janzen and Jamie Vollmer have a team-best three goals each, with six of their nine combined goals coming in the last six matches.
OFFENSIVE DEFENDERS • Indiana has gotten a nice offensive lift from its back four in 2014.
• Left back Patrick Doody is second in assists (3), tied for fourth in goals scored (2) and is alone in fourth in total points (7). • Both of Doody's goals have been game winners this year, in a 1-0 win over Dartmouth and a 4-2 victory over UCF.
• Two of his three assists have come in the last two matches, both of which led to goals from Jamie Vollmer. • Freshman centerback Grant Lillard got in on the scoring with his first career goal coming vs. UCF on September 24. He added his first career game winner in IU's 3-0 win at No. 18 Louisville.
• It was right back Billy McConnell that set up the score against UCF as he whipped the ball into the box, where the 6-4 Lillard headed it home. McConnell picked up his second assist of the year on Matt Foldesy's score in the win over SLU.
SPREADING THE WEALTH • The Indiana coaching staff preached before the start of the season that goal scoring would be by committee, and that is just what has happened in 2014.
• The Hoosiers are second in the Big Ten in goals scored with 19, with 10 different players accounting for the 19 tallies. • Tanner Thompson, Femi Hollinger-Janzen and Jamie Vollmer lead the way with three scores, while Grant Lillard, Patrick Doody and Trevor Swartz have come up with two each.
• Five different players have double digits in the shot tally, led by 35 from Thompson.
CAUGHT IN HIS WEBB • Sophomore Colin Webb has been a standout in goal for IU in 2014 after taking over the starting role at the end of the 2013 season.
• Webb picked up his first shutout in a 1-0 win over No. 12 Marquette. For his play vs. the Golden Eagles and also in a 1-1 tie with No. 9 Georgetown, Webb was named to the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic All-Tournament team. • He posted back-to-back shutouts in 1-0 wins over Kentucky and Dartmouth at the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament.
• Against the Big Green he stopped a penalty kick to preserve the IU victory. • Webb also picked up back-to-back Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors on September 2 and 9.
• His fourth shutout of the year came with three saves in a 0-0 double overtime tie with Butler. • Shutout number five came with six saves in a 3-0 win at No. 18 Louisville.
• At Ohio State on October 12 Webb had three saves, including his second penalty kick stop of the season to preserve a 2-1 Indiana victory. • So far this season Webb has 37 saves and allowed just eight goals in 1127:59 minutes of action for a 0.64 GAA.
• As a true freshman Webb started all three matches in goal in the Big Ten Tournament, leading IU to wins over Michigan, Penn State and Michigan State en route to the program's 12th Big Ten title. • Webb finished with three shutouts and 29 saves in 578 minutes of action last fall, posting a record of 3-2-1.

• Indiana is wasting no time scoring in matches this year as 11 of its 19 goals have come in the first half. • Twice this season IU has scored with less than three minutes gone in a game, with Patrick Doody's goal vs. Dartmouth coming at 2:19, and Jamie Vollmer's score against UCF coming at 2:41.
• In fact, seven of IU's 19 scores have come with less than 26 minutes elapsed in the game.
NCAA RPI • The NCAA released its third set of RPI numbers on October 13 and the Hoosiers moved up to No. 1 overall.
