BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana field hockey team suffered a defeat against Ohio State in overtime on Friday, 2-1.
Junior Nicole Volgraf scored the Hoosiers’ (9-4, 1-4 Big Ten) lone goal of the contest as she tipped one in to the right side of the goal off an assist from Hannah McDermott in the seventh minute. The goal was Volgraf’s sixth of the season.
After shutting out the Buckeyes (6-8, 1-4 Big Ten) in the first period, the Hoosiers surrendered a goal four minutes into the second period as Annabel Sams tied the game.
The Buckeyes had numerous opportunities to take the lead in the second period, as they outshot the Hoosiers, 9-3.
After a yellow card on Indiana junior Sydney Supica, Ohio State had a final shot to win the game in regulation as they were awarded a penalty corner – their 10th of the contest – with just over two minutes remaining. However, Emma Royce’s shot was blocked to extend the contest.
Supica’s time in the penalty box carried over to the overtime period, as she was forced to sit out the start of the 15-minute period.
Ohio State’s Peanut Johnson found the opening and knocked in the game-winner for the Buckeyes with only 4:03 gone in overtime.
Goalkeeper Maggie Olson made seven saves in the contest, bringing her career total to 213 – third in Indiana program history.
Indiana will travel to Penn State to take on the No. 5 Nittany Lions on Sunday at 12 p.m. Fans can follow along with GameTracker, available at IUHoosiers.com.
