BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Four members of the Indiana women’s tennis team will compete in the USTA/ITA Division I Ohio Valley Regional Championships on Oct. 17-21 in Knoxville, Tenn. The University of Tennessee will host the event.
IU will be sending seniors Alecia Kauss, Katie Klyczek and Shannon Murdy to play at Tennessee along with freshman Stephanie Smith. All four players have automatically qualified for the main draws for both singles and doubles play in this weekend’s event. The final qualifying spots for the main draws will take place on Friday as main draw play will begin on Saturday, Oct. 18.
Play in the main doubles draw will get started on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. ET. The draw consists of 32 tandems. IU’s Murdy and Smith will team up to play Kentucky’s Edmee Morin-Kougoucheff and Kirsten Lewis in the opening round. Kauss and Klyczek will team together to face Murray State’s Eleonore and Verginie Tchakarova to begin the tournament.
The main singles draw consists of 64 players. Kauss and Klyczek will play their first match at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Murdy and Smith will each play at 2:15 p.m. Kauss will take on Ellie Yates from Vanderbilt. Klyczek is matched up with Liza Tymchenko of Memphis. Murdy will battle UTC’s Kayla Jones and Smith will play Olivia Boesing from Louisville.
This will be the second tournament of the fall for this group as Indiana competed at William & Mary in September. The remaining players on the roster will compete next weekend in Bloomington in the Hoosier Classic on Oct. 24-26.
