IU Men Finish 14th in Loaded Field at Wisconsin Invite

Madison, Wis. -- In a field that included 19 nationally-ranked men’s programs, the Indiana men’s cross country team placed 14th at the Wisconsin Invitational on Friday afternoon. On the women’s side, which included 22 nationally ranked teams, the Hoosiers placed 29th overall.
Matt Schwartzer led No. 23 Indiana with a 48th place finish in the 8K run on the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course. He clocked in at 24:20. He was followed close behind by teammates Evan Esselink (53rd, 24:22) and Jason Crist (68th, 24:27). Also scoring for IU was Owen Skeete, who placed 102nd in a time of 24:39, and Kieran Reilly, who placed 123rd in 24:49.
Only 29 seconds separated Indiana’s scoring pack of five runners as they combined for 394 points. The Hoosiers were the third Big Ten team in the standings behind Wisconsin (3rd) and Michigan (9th). No. 6 Syracuse took the top prize for the men as No. 14 Iona placed second.
In the women’s race, Brittany Neeley paced the Hoosiers with a 95th place finish. She finished in a time of 21:10 on the 6K course. Amanda Behke followed in 120th position in a time of 21:28. Also scoring for IU was Bethany Neeley (138th, 21:36), Jill Whitman (143rd, 21:38) and Amelia Reynolds (171st, 21:51). The IU scoring pack finished within 41 seconds of each other.
Indiana is not done competing this weekend as the remaining members of the team will run in the Pre-National Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind. on Saturday, Oct. 18. That event begins at 11 a.m. ET.
