IOWA CITY, Iowa. -- The Indiana University women's soccer team (5-10-1, 1-8-1 Big Ten) came up short in a 1-0 loss at Iowa on Friday night in Iowa City. It marked the seventh time through 10 conference games so far this season that the Hoosiers have played a game decided by one goal or less.
Iowa (10-4-1, 5-3-1 Big Ten) scored the only goal of the game in the 29th minute. After the initial shot hit the crossbar and bounced back into play, the Hawkeyes played the ball to the unmarked Natalie Krygier at the back post. Her one-time shot deflected off the hands of Sarah Stone in the IU goal and into the back of the net to give the Hawkeyes the 1-0 lead.
"My heart breaks for this team," Indiana head coach Amy Berbary said. "They work so hard and we know that we are a better team than what our record shows right now. But, at the end of the day, you have to put the ball in the back of the net and come away with the result. So we will keep working and trying to find a way to come away with the results we need down the stretch."
Despite Iowa holding a 13-2 edge in corner kicks and 18-7 advantage in shots, the Hoosiers had their fair share of chances in the attacking third. Senior Bekah White had a pair of shots in the first half that forced Iowa goalkeeper Hannah Clark to make the save. Freshman Annelie Leitner was able to get her head on a shot in the 34th minute but it ended up going over the crossbar. And then in the closing seconds of the first half, freshman Nickie Zuckerman's shot went wide of the goal, so Iowa took a 1-0 lead into the locker room.
"Overall, I felt that we did pretty well defending as a team," Indiana goalkeeper Sarah Stone said. "Iowa is a very dangerous team and I thought we held our own. We had a couple minor mistakes that we can't make, and one of those led to their goal, which proved to be the difference in the game."
Early on in the second half, freshman Kayla Smith was able to find some space just inside the box on the right side, but her shot tailed off to the right side of the goal. Iowa then had a couple chances to extend its lead on an open goal, but the IU defenders were able to get back and clear the ball off the line to keep it at a one-goal deficit.
With the clock winding down in regulation, senior Rebecca Dreher stepped into a ball 40 yards in front of the Iowa goal and launched a high-arching shot. As the ball got closer to the goal, it became apparent that it had a chance to go in and the Iowa keeper was struggling to judge it. But the ball would eventually sail high and over the goal, ending the final chance for the Hoosiers.
"I know this team, no matter what, will never give up," Berbary said. "They have tremendous pride in what it says on the front of their jerseys and will scrap and fight until the end of each and every game. With that kind of mindset, we know that we will keep getting better and have the chance to get the results these last few games."
The Hoosiers will travel to Lincoln, Nebraska, to take on the Cornhuskers at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday. The game will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
